My experiences with chatrooms are not positive. People tend to spend more time in a chatroom than focussing on what the board is really about. I've been to numerous boards where they had a chatroom and in the end the whole board was nothing BUT a chatroom. This is a photoshop forum and I like it to be focussed on that. I love Photoshop and love to exhange knowledge and that should be the major goal of the board. I vote against chat rooms.

Just my 2 cents

Perhaps I already voted, don't remember.

My idea is like Gaussian's. I mean: there are chat-rooms enough on the www, so why not meet there if you want to chat? You don't (at least I don't) go to a pub to find some book or go to the library to drink a beer. This here is about Photoshop and everything that orbits around it.
Just look at TG, and how even "active forums can turn into a chit chat elephant talk...
No, not for me.

Well, I haven't voted yet and I'm not sure that I will since either way I vote will possibly have an effect on people who have a definate "Yes" or "No" answer, and I'm pretty much middle-of-the-road on this one.

I suppose if there were a chat room on the site, I might pop in once in a while, but since I'm on the board mostly at work, then the visits would be far and few between. Visiting a static board at work is different than being in a live room in my opinion. I can browse the board at leisure, whereas a chat room would require alot more of my attention. Besides, I would surely hate to offend anyone by inadvertently ignoring them if/when they spoke to me and my eyes were elsewhere at the time (know what I mean?) Or this scenario: You're in a chat room & some rude newbie (who only signs up to get into the room) comes in and suddenly expects you to drop everything and solve all his problems for him, give him a serial number or three, then asks if you wanna cyber!" hehe Yes, it's happened before, to me even!

There isn't a chat room now, and I really haven't found myself wishing there were, well, unless I'm REALLY in need of something to do, however, most of the time when I'm on the board there isn't anyone else signed on. I'd really hate to be stuck in a room talking to myself...

So yes or no it doesn' t matter to me, it's just a chat room after all.

Katerpiller (sorry I don't know your first name)

Just read your comments and I think you make a good point here:

Then I read a few of your IM conversations on your moron page...what a hoot. I usually only IM with close friends so I don't get the variety of conversations.... Maybe direct communications isn't so good of an idea.
Maybe post and read is the most beneficial way to enjoy PS Guru after all.

Hi Joy,

Those Moron pages got their start about 3.5 years ago when I was still pretty fresh on the web. I started going into a chat room to get help with HTML and graphics and since it was on AOL, I ended up getting alot of idiots asking for off the wall crap. I really wanted to build a website, but I was pretty stumped for "content". Then after I got a real doozie of an IM, I decided to start posting some of them on the web. Solved the content issue AND helped me learn HTML. It helps to have thick skin, a sense of humor and maybe a bit of a mean streak ;) when dealing with idiots. hehe

So yeah, I've had chat room experience. I still go into the same chat room on AOL sometimes, and I've met alot of great people from there. There's about 25 of us that meet in Vegas (or elsewhere, depends on who gets the idea) about once a year. There are also PLENTY of idiots who come into the room, but there's an 'Ignore' feature that I'm not afraid to use. The room needs alot of policing, and when there is someone who comes in with a legit puter question it can, at times, be hard for them to get the help they need when there's a disruption in the room. Being that it's AOL, it is pretty hard to stay on topic when the room is full to capacity. So with the amount of visitors this site gets, and a chat room possibly drawing more, PS might end up taking a backseat to BS. If the room is intended just for Photoshop chat, it might not work out, but if it's just for chat in general, it might be OK.

I still retain my 'Neutral' position. ;)

By the way, my name is Christine :D

It's a miracle. This tread's come back from the dead!!!!

I think it's betteer to can this idea. I agree with Christine, Erik and Gaussian. Sometimes a chat room can be a bit troublesome most especially when there are others who do not use it properly.

Im not sure why this came back, ut its ok. Can we all please post and vote on the sticky thread since that one will be counted? Thanks :\

I changed my vote to yes... though I sure hope that the chatting could have more to do with most anything as in apposed to being limited to PS...

I joined another 3d board recently, and I found at first that for the most part chat was kinda dumb, you know, just sitting there reading and typing life's bs...

but then all of a sudden something happened... there were four of five members in the chat, and somebody came up with a wicked 3d project idea, and then this was added onto very quickly like... things were being created as we typed and posted on the forums, and the links posted in chat... so ya had to have a few windows open and move around some, but frig was it ever fun...

I would post yas a link from this collaboration, but... the thread on the forum got deleted as the storyline was getting away out of hand hehe... and to think that it was the site's admin who came up with most of it... haha, what a night that was though...

that's where I came up with Ricky the Wicked Rat... character seen in my subd humour post...

so... long story short, it can be a great communication tool just so long as things don't get carried away in some way or another...

In our case it was the storyline, which ended up pretty adult in content, with a drugged out Elephant, a f+cked up rat, a corrupt city.... I could go on but.. that's where it got kinda stupid :D

but wow on how fast things got done... must have been 4 or five models in no time, like in less than an hour I had the rat modeled, there was a trike built for him by another member, the elephant was modeled, as was a silly car for him, and I mean this was one of the most productive, though silliest nights I have ever been a part of :D

gee, I wonder if I made a good case to have a chat, or a bad example of why there shouldn't be a chat ? [confused] [confused] :D

nah, I say go for it... it could be a ton of fun hanging out and getting involved with collabs of the nice varieties :D or just chatting and watching the fun unfold :D :D

176 members ??? [confused]

There were more when i left for personal reasons some time ago...
Personally i am not into the chat stuff but i think it might be usefull/fun to others... so ...YES

Nikkie

176 members? What are you seeing there Nikkie? If you're talking about the Forum overall, there's over 1650 members now. :righton:

That number is shown on the front page. :B

Exactly. I don't mind a chat that deals mostly with graphics and design, but it's exactly like gidge says, after a while it's mostly about life's bs. Also some guys tend to try to impress female chatters with childish jokes or "double talk".

I voted NO.

Ya, but gidge was there, and soon the idle bs chatter turned into one very intense 3d jam session... there was like four of five different members all modeling and brainstorming, and it was like one of my best experiences I have ever had on the web...

I mean personaly I would just love the op to 3d jam with some of the members here... do up a model, post it, someone else has a better idea fo coloring or posing, takes the model, or a snapshot, goes off to artland for a few minutes, and whoila, post's a totaly different take... on and on it goes... thing is, in some respects doing this through chat along with the regular boards, is much better than just the boards themselves... it's so much more interactive...

so yea, art jamming is a cool time on any chat... PS guru's doing their thing, modelers same same same, animators, hell even bring in sound people and the whole nine yards...

Post a thread... call it say PSG Art Jam 1... GuruTown... and whenever ya get home and feel like jamming ya open the board, as well hop onto the chat and just try to keep up is all.... it's fast and frantic, and so many cool things go on so fast it's, well, it's just plain a ton of fun...

Some of the more gifted story tellers could be sharing and creating the storylines...

Some members who are terrific at building lanscapes could lay down the framework for GuruTown, and surrounding area, other members could model up some sidewalks, streets, buildings, light posts, houses, others could do up some cars, trucks, bikes, trikes, planes, trains, while others could do some characters... those with fast computers could do the scene sets, lighting etc, other ps fanatics could get involved taking renders into PS and applying postwork... and everybody get's a vote into just which final renders go into a final online comic... Which could very well go on forever eh... :D

So no on the idle life's bs stuff, but hell yea on using Chat as a fun tool to get some collabs a happening :righton:

Gidge i thought that thePhotoshop Campfire thread was

intended for that kind of projects...though i like the idea :righton:

Nikkie

haha, I suppose that you are right on there Nikkie.... though out of respect for all the PS purist's here at PSG, I sort of stick to the other interest's and 3d like forums... ( I really don't use PS all that much, just really like hanging out here as PSG is pretty laid back compared to a lot of other places... :) )

anyways, no matter where the post's go, doing it via "chat" is way more interactive, and in conjuction with using the regular boards... it's just totaly fast and fun stuff...

Glad you like the idea :)

Well, I just got off from a chat on another 3d board I frequent, and I have to tell you... if all the nay sayers continue in this direction then, well, it is really too bad... your missing out on a very cool tool.

Man, I logged on and instantly was greeted by five members :) Felt good to feel a belonging... then I was greeted with a few hey James, did you see the latest work by so and so... then a few links were posted... wow... some very cool worx were shown, some different opinions were given, and all of this happened within a few minutes...

all the while a couple of other members were discussing various cool techniques, and rambling back and forth a bit, then presto, another link popped up, everybody had a boo... so cool

some good humour was passed back and forth, and it was a marvelous time :) Perhaps it just this particular bunch of people, but I can tell you that they in no way are the juvenile crowd you see on most chat rooms...

Nope, it was very cool, and each time I go there it feels great... like walking into a room of buds...

hey James...
hey..
check this out...
holy frig, that's cool..
yea
how long did it take for the render...
twenty minutes...
:)
:)
check out the gallery lately?
no
link
pause
oh yea, I reallly like the one ... did
yea, textures could use...
I agree...
hey!! (artist) :D
yea, you guys are right (artist)
pause
like this? (artist pops back)
totaly right on :righton:
Looks awesome now :righton:
thanks guys :)
hey, what we are here for
hey
........ on and on it went... it was cool, work was done and viewed, everybody went their own way, and tonight will show some new and exciting things to say and do... coffee shop stuff

So yea, say nay all ya want... everybody is entitled to an opinion for sure... I say bummmer... PSG is just the type of community which ccould llook beyond all the bs of most chats, and really enjoy thee experience for how it could be...

anyway these are my last words on this subject... if it happens then great, if not, oh well, I tried :)

Ok, one more word or two... the thing that makes PSG a great place for this to happen, beside the family like feelings here, is that thtere is a board to interact with... chat, post comment, bla bla... the whole experience in one place..

Man, it would be so cool to learn PS with someone posting interactively...

hey James try out this...
ok
like this
nah, needs to be a little more with (tool)
ok, how's this...
Yea, that's more like it
Now, take those layers and....
oh wow man, that was one cool method thanks
no probs
You guys are rock'n
so are you now James
:)
:)
on it goes... and it felt great to learn from people in this manner :)

Gidge that sounds pretty cool :righton:

I surely would like to know where ths is happening sounds like a great place to me !! ;)
