Opinions on website design

No reason. I just thought it was peculiar that you post that link and the author's name of that article is Paul Gil.

LOL no mate, sorry young sleuth the force needs to be stronger in you.

we are all aware the Op has not been back to this site in nearly 3 months arent we.?????

that's true Hoogle:
hey guys, this a site I'm working on for a friend's martial arts club.
linky: Home - fusionmaf

But simon was making it for his friend Luke and his friend is now asking for feedback. His comments are current.

But tx for noticing that. Who hasn't rambled on in some thread a spammer bumped up. C'mon you guys! You know you have

Hi Chris, Thanks I appreciate the feedback and input. I want to make this the best it can be.
I am using a flash website, so everything on it is an image except for the Comic Sans text and Headers for the text blocks on there. I am going to invest some time into looking at how to create menu buttons that will have drop downs on them on the moonfruit format but right now my main interest is getting it functional, noticed and used by my students. Question Time:

 What on earth is a period symbol? My English Grammer is attrocious, I know. Shame on me.
 The purpose of the buttons on the left side of the page are for parents and businesses to check out my credentials. The CRB takes them to the Criminal Records Bureau to make sure I am CRB Cleared, the AMA logo takes them to the AMAUK website for them to see who it is that I answer to in the event that I am not doing what I am supposed to be, the First Aid simply states I am First Aid Trained and I am a responsible Instructor as are all my Instructors. I am looking to moving the buttons somewhere else on the home page but I am a little short on space and my organisational skills leave much to be desired.
 Move what content section down and down where? and Which Background Image that we should see more of?
 I put that menu at the bottom as someone suggested that I do so to prevent the whole having to scroll back to the top to get anywhere in the website thing, I thought about putting in on one line across the width but I am unsure, as I am also considering putting those buttons on the side there. Any thoughts?

Apart from that thank you very much for your feedback, I welcome all feedback and consider implementing all of it carefully before I decide what to do. Would you mind giving me an Image representation of how you would organise it? Please also have a look at the rest of the website and give me thoughts. fusionmaf.co.uk

. <----- is a period symbol

"I put that menu at the bottom as someone suggested that I do so to prevent the whole having to scroll back to the top to get anywhere in the website thing, I thought about putting in on one line across the width but I am unsure, as I am also considering putting those buttons on the side there. Main navigation ALWAYS belongs at the top. You don't want people searching through your main page to find the navigation. This is a lesson in Web Design/Navigation 101 so to speak brother. Scrolling is something we can't get around. So long as it is vertical scrolling through a website, no one is going to mind. It's when websites go into horizontal scrolling that people get bothered.

I don't question the the purpose of the buttons on the left side of the page, just the placement of the buttons. They are external links and as such, they should be placed in some other area of your website. The area they are in is a location that users expect to find website navigation, not external links.

Like I said, you have a decent thing going on here, but you'd do well to take a closer look at the placement of your elements (website navigation, external links, etc). I've been working on templates for a few weeks now to go on my portfolio website. And due to the honest, and professional feedback I get from this community, I always learn something or notice something I didn't see before through the help of others. Also, I think it's awesome that you're willing to show off your work. Web Design is collaborative.

I suggest you don't remove the links from the bottom, just spread them across on one line, and keep them simple like they are now, not buttons. Just above these might be the place to put your external links. Chris has a good point about them being in the real content of your home page.

Like Chris said (so did I earlier), vertical scrolling is no biggie, especially since people's screens are different sizes so your "on one page" may not be the same as another's. It is the horizontal scrolling people don't want to do. Take a look at some other web sites and think about how yours compares. In no way do I mean that you should change your format. It looks good. But you might get some ideas how to handle those pesky little issues

website design should be simple

Not that I doubt the logic behind your thoughts Sam, but one thing I want to bring up is that people aren't simple. We like to complicate things and push the boundaries. It's the one thing we've been consistently good at. It's in this respect that web design probably won't be simple. You know years ago we used to have websites filled with graphics, animations, etc. That was what defined the complexity of web design. Now we have standards compliant code, rich internet applications and video on websites. This is the complexity behind web design today. Essentially, we've traded one mask for another. Personally, I don't care for simple bare to the bones boring websites. We have technology and software to help us realize our visions. So I say use it to the fullest and don't look back. Also, if website design was simple anyone could do it themselves. Consider the repercussions that would have on professional web designers who do this stuff for a living.

Thanks Clare, so taking into account the changes you have made there, and I like what I see, I hope you don't mind me using that lay out... Here is what I have done. New Website Layout.jpg

Thankyou for being polite Matt, I value your honesty. I don't want to simply make myself look thinner on the website. I want to gradually lose the weight doing my training and advertise that through my website. The weight will come off and it is something I am working towards achieving. I think it looks better in the long run for people to see my progress through my website while I use my training to do it rather than just do it on photoshop and surprise them when they meet me.
