extracting a pattern from a jpeg image

Hello all,

I’ve been trying to do this for a bit and I don’t really know what the best way, less time consuming and more effective.

I have a jpeg image with a pattern on it. See jpeg attached.

I would like to be able to extract the dark color from it and put it in a file without background. My aim is to use this pattern and put it in a text in an other design I’m doing in Illustrator.

So far the only option I know of is selecting with the magic wand tool bit by bit of the pattern. Do anybody have another solution.

If this is the only solution, would some just point me the steps 1,2,3….10 to that I should exactly do to make sure that I don’t run into trouble down the road at certain point. Indeed, I never selected as much different parts, I would want to lose any part, or erase anything or else.

Thanks for reading !

The easiest way I can think of to do this is to use the blend if option. Be sure the layer is selected, click on the fx at the bottom of the layers panel. Choose blending options. Go to the slider section at the bottom. Using the top slider on the white slide, move it to the left. Experiment with breaking this triangle in half. Hod down the alt key and select the left half, move it more to the left. You will see the results and can try different variations. After that, you can erase or put on a layer mask and paint out any imperfections in the pale BG.

Be sure you keep a copy of your original image.

1212 (0;00;00;00)_1.png Qucik try, I turned the color you didnt want to green- roughly then used keylight in after effects to - the green , its not a great job but if you have more time to spend yourself you might get some better results

Here it is in PNG form with a second layer set to multiply. I did this so that I could remove more of the pale color then accentuate the dark pattern

i dont know if you any of you has used the color range option but i use it a lot. selection>color range.

here is the outcome (did it in 5-10 second)

Afterthought: Why dont you make a selection of a small square from your jpeg and save it as pattern.

EDIT: in black
