CS4 Keeps Crashing, Need help

Try uninstalling, then using the CS4 clean script... it will remove all traces of CS4 from your computer.... then try a clean install.

Adobe - Adobe CS4 Clean Script

lol I was just about to post that, you beet me to it, but thanks for the help in helping this member out, kinda got worried I was on my own lol

How did you get on?

Sorry it's 03:18 here in the UK so I'm off to bed, I'll be back in the morning to help if still needed :)

Sorry about that, the uninstall took quite some time.

At the very end of the uninstall, the program said "Some problems occured while components were being removed. Please see below."

But the only thing below was the Exit button, so I clicked that. I am about to go run the clean script now.

Thank you, and I hope you have a pleasant night!

Ok, the clean up script won't run. I downloaded the file, unzipped it to an appropriate location. I followed the detailed instructions included in the folder contents. Adobe Reader seems to be working now but won't allow me to print (not that that has anything to do with anything, *chuckle*).

Apparently this is because I do not have Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. However, Microsoft has gotten rid of that program as of June 2010 and I cannot download it now from their website.

So....any other ways I can clean up? Should I just go delete all the folders/files for Adobe? Is there another place I can get the Cleanup Utility from?

Edit: I just found I can download the Clean Up utility on Major Geeks. I have never downloaded anything from there before. Does anyone have any experience with Major Geeks? Are they safe to download from?

This is a link to the Windows Cleanup tool you are looking for :), I think you said you needed this and then it would run the Photoshop CS4 clean up tool, well this is what I think it is, as youy can see it's from microsoft, this will be shown when you load up the tool, befoer you let it run.

You will also have to run in adminitartor mode, this may not need to be done in Win XP.

I thought I would pop down to see it you posted back, so that my help there :)

I hope you deactivated PS before you un-installed it
You're only allowed 2 installations and then it won't activate again.

In your first post you said you reset the preferences file.
You did that by starting PS while holding down the Ctrl+Alt+Shft keys right?

Oh, crap. No, I didn't deactivate it. I'm pretty much screwed now, right? *sigh*

I'm going to let my virus scan finish and then try and install it...I can't believe I forgot to deactivate it. I KNEW to do that but it totally slipped my mind.

And yes, that is how I reset the preferences.

KRF - thanks. I ran both Win Cleanup Utility and then the Adobe cleanup utility, as soon as I finish the virus scan I will try and reinstall it - but it probably won't work, since I forgot to deactivate it last time I tried the reinstall AND this time. So I've already had my two installs.

Guess I will be buying Photoshop. Again. *chuckle*

Thanks for all the help.

You are allowed to activate it as many times as needed if it's on the same computer and you are just re-installing to fix problems like this. I think there's an option to call Adobe when you need to activate it.... use that if the automatic activation doesn't work.

Of course it's easier to deactivate it before uninstalling and use web activation but don't worry you are not just screwed because you forgot. You paid for the software and you are entitled to use it.... at least I hope so :/

Ok well I got it reinstalled - it took my code so I got that part done.

However, Photoshop opens now, but it still crashes as soon as I try to start a new project, open an existing project, etc.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I've done the system restore, the uninstall, the cleanup utility, the reinstall, the reset of preferences...

It is working! Oh my gosh, it is FINALLY working. I did another system restart then reset my preferences again, and now it is working.

THANK YOU ALL!! You guys rock.

It was a total nightmare, but I'm so glad it is working - I couldn't have done it without you guys. I really, truly appreciate it! Now I'm off to try and cram 2 weeks worth of work into 3 days. *chuckle*. First I need to stock up on Dr. Pepper!

I'm happy you got it working again, I may not be the best at Photoshop but I do know my way round a computer, I hope you get the work done you need todo in the time frame, and you also come back to the forum.

Have fun what ever you do :)

Thank you KRF and iDad!! I will stick around, for sure. :) I've found some great tips and techniques here when I'm snooping around!

And KRF - I'm a hybrid paper-crafter, so mostly use Photoshop and Illustrator for cards, altered projects, stationary sets, photo books, digital scrpabooks, etc. Also desktop publishing and I dabble in web design. I design everything, then print, cut, assemble, or alter, depending on what I am doing. I use a wide-format printer, and a digital plotter head die cut machine (cuts from Illustrator) to do my stuff. Although sometimes I still resort to my good ol' fashioned manual die cut machine :D

I used to be strictly web design/Internet scripting but somewhere over the past 12 years my passion changed to paper crafts. I'm not quite sure exactly where, though :D

You must enjoy bucking the trends :)

Sounds like you do a lot of interesting work. Post some pics when you have time, I'm sure everyone would love to see them.
