Ooops, I see one more potential problem, your Brush is too large ( 2500 ), try to make it smaller, the number is line thickness in pixels.

And the reason why your picture is grey-white boxed ( means transparent ) and my white is the selection Background Contents in New document dialog box where I have White while you obviously transparent.

EDIT: Was on bucket tool trying to make the layer white.. of course it didn't work?

Do not panic, just click on those gray-white boxes now. I will test it on my computer too.

OK, it works, just click now anywhere in the picture.

Then you can change to Brush ( Tools box left ), pick a colour ( double click on the white part of double square ) and draw.

Problem is it should have worked even with the Bucket now. What confuses me is why do you have black in the Layers icon. I will test this.
