What would be the best method of taking the colors off a waving flag?

I have an image of a large flag waving in the wind that I would like to use as a "surface" to graft a 2D graphic onto. That is the easy part that I can do.

The only issue is that I need to remove the existing flag design and leave it as all white while retaining the texture of light and dark areas. Replacing the colors with white didnt work like I needed, nor did just turning up the brightness.

Is there a method to pull this off? I'm basically looking to turn an existing flag into a surrender flag. Thanks for any help you can give!

without seeing the picture i will ask

cant you just make a selection of the flag

create a new layer

select a white brush and paint over the flag area on the new layer

then set that layer blending mode to colour, hue, overlay, which ever 1 works best

It may come out slightly grey so you may need to add an exposure or brightness adjustment layer clipped to the layer you painted in white. But if you over brighten it you will loose the shading

Thanks for the suggestions.

But it seems like I still cant quite eliminate the existing pattern on the flag without it losing the flag texture.

upload your image and you will get an answer have you tried creating a displacement map from it

There's no way to "retain the texture of light and dark areas" from, say, waving US flag.
Besides, making flags in 3d is much more interesting.

3d means Photoshop3d
