Use on only one layer

Is there a way to make PSD's affect only one layer? I have two layers, one of the person and one of the background behind them, and I want only the person to be affected by the PSD.

A PSD would be the whole document, are you talking about "adjustment layers"? If so hold ALT and move your mouse in between the two layers with the adjustment layer ABOVE and a icon different to your mouse will come up. Click and it makes a clipping mask.
