URGENT: would you say this was a good photo?

I was speaking to a very wise tutor, he's been teaching photography for around 45 years or so, when I asked him about this rule of thirds his face dropped and his exact words 'bullsh*t' (keep in mind this bloke is in his 70's I would say) He then went on to say "there is no actual rules of composition in photography, if they all went by the same rule to be in the 'right position' they would all look samey, it's good to be different and good to deliver something different. The best photographs I have ever seen have smashed any rules they had been suggested and broke the barriers of what we thought was possible with a camera" try and do that instead?

My point is, your first photo is good - it's each to their own on what its message is, to me its the composition that suggests the dog looking over as guarding the person, being on watch...? Anyway, stick to your guns and don't constrain yourself to this 'rule of thirds' business, be creative, be different. :)
