Two messes

The two latest things I have been working on in Photoshop have turned into complete messes and I doubt that they are fixable. I think part of the problem is that I just start slabbing away at things without any kind of plan behind wballerina-hav-3-krympt.jpghat I am doing. I´ll post them here, and I know that they are a mess, but I´m wondering if anyone could tell me what I should have done differently.

I see what you tried to do and the ideas are nice, maybe look at how you layer and blend.

Thank you Belial! I think I also don´t understand layer masks yet. Every time I use one, and then try to use a layer style on the layer with the mask, the edges show through all over the place. layer masks don´t really seem to erase what you are trying to erase, they seem to just make them kind of transparent until you do something else and then they show through. I don´t understand what I´m doing wrong, others don´t seem to have that problem. :)

Vafann, how about posting one or more of your psd's and see if someone might have a go at it and some advice for you based on seeing your steps and playing with it.

I think they're great ideas, the first so romantic and the second humorous. But I understand, with some images it's time to move on, or set them aside anyway. Still, I hope you get help to keep on going.

(you're funny: "God, I even messed up posting them lol")

Thank you Ibclare! That´s a good idea, If someone would like to play around with the PSD, that would be great. Now, How do I post it? Do you link it somehow? :)

Check the rules for size limit but I believe it's around 20 M, so if your psd isn't too big, I think you can just upload it same way as any other img. If it's too big just downsize some of the features. Layer effects add a lot (you could delete them but mke a note what they are and settings) and you can downsize the entire doc. But chk rules.

you've pretty much explained a layer mask right there, a layer mask controls the transpaerency of an image, it doesnt erase anything. and if you are using an eraser on a layer mask, swap it out for the black paintbrush tool instead. just a quick head up, i'm sure you probably already know that.

or upload it to media fire and post the link up.

Thank you Ibclare and Zeealex! I have been reading up on masks and I think that one thing I haven´t understood is that there is more than one kind of mask, and that layer masks aren´t the best kind of thing to clean up selection edges with. I think I will have to start all over again, this time trying to learn to use the pen tool better and, and use other extraction methods than just coarsly cutting around the the edges of something and then trying to fix it with layer masks. I also need to learn how to modify brushes better, I have been able to maybe change the direction of them a bit, and resize them but that´s all.

Again I guess it all just comes down to study and practice, and above all patience, which I really don´t have much of lol. I don´t think I´ll post the PSD´s , I still don´t understand how to do it, and I´m sure they are ENORMOUS, the way I have been messing around with them.

Thank you for your suggestions though, and it most surely is something I need to learn how to do, if I am going to post a PSD in the future. :)

You're welcome and I'm sure you'll get it. I worked for over an hour on an image (after the last save I did) and PS quit, just quit. Lousy program, LOL. But as it turned out, most of the time was spent in trial and error and when I reopened it, I had a better idea of what to do and the whole document stayed a lot more organized and cleaner. You never know...

:D just one question then i'll leave you alone (your work is great btw, better than what i could do) do you apply the layer mask before moving on?

Clare i hope you don't mind but i had to have a go at doing it this way.

haha! I have given up on that for now, I´m going to save it for later when I can look at it without being frustrated lol. I reused the ballerina and tried something different, but it turned out pretty weird too lol.

yep i was asking you XD and no worries.

Ok, I still don´t really understand what you mean lol, what is XD? About applying masks, I don´t really know how, that is my problem, I put them on to clean the edges and then I go to the next layer, but I don´t think I do it right at all. :)
