text effects

I thought you might. I think that's the most interesting part of it. And why I described the steps. Simple, simple, simple.

Do any of the earlier versions of PS have smart objects? I went from PS 6 to CS5 so IDK. I guess one purpose of the smart object with this BG is for changing the cloud effects if you want to do that after you've finished all the steps. However, I tried to make this without using a smart object and I did not get the rich, textured background, but something almost transparent. Maybe if you don't use smart obj. you would choose some photo with high contrasts, deep colors. I'll have to experiment.

I have CS3 and it has smart objects, but I think they started with this version. Man Clare, I have to say again those are just great, I especially like the first two, fantastic! :)

Thanks Vafann. I can write out steps for you if you ever want to do those. What I liked about the tutorials was learning techniques that can be applied to imagery. I tried the hammered metal BG w/o smart obj and it came out less of a deep rust, but looked just fine when the color overlay opacity was brought down to make it a muted metal color. I think one could use another color layer above to fix that or flatten the layer and its effects then make adjustments. That's the beauty of Photoshop, so many work-arounds.

Yes, having them apply to imagery is exactly what I want to learn to do! :) I use smart obljects a lot, mainly becuase I don´t want to screw something up that I am scaling or transforming in some other way. I can´t say that I have come to grips with all that you can do with them, and I find myself having to rasterize smart objects a lot, because of things like I can´t get the masks to follow the image when I use them, amoung other things. I´m sure I´m doing something wrong of course lol. :)

nice job Clare! holy Sh** those are quite amazing! but one thing dont mean to be jerky but, carbon fiber for the heavy metal? carbon fiber is light as a feather. well compared to metal.
but who cares!! i like em!

Oops. Well I guess I didn't take that into consideration. Guess I'll go back into Photoshop and change the word. "Carbon Fiber" sounds good to me. And I don't consider your advice one bit jerky. Am I easy on your work, XD? Wait till you get the scan of the first 6 pages of your manuscript that I proofread!!!!!!!!! You'll never apologize for another thing to me.

BTW Vafann, editable text is another reason to convert text to smart object. Using filters and going back in to change the text, font, etc. And the transformation protection is the main reason to use it for imagery of course.

were's the "love this" button? well, love it clare! ;D

and don't worry about the proof reading, if i start winging about it when i get it, it won't help me learn, will it?

I love the Fire and Ice. I would love to learn how to do this. Did you make a tutorial?

Hi dmccallum, here is the tutorial from Hoogle which he gave us in the week 8 challenge:

http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/photoshop-contests/32404-photoshop-challenge-week-8-a.html

As for the ice effect, I created that myself. To get specific about the steps I used I would have to go back and look at my psd, but it uses some layer effects, glows, some images of ice at different opacities, and probably some clipping masks. If you google it, you'll find lots of tuts online of varying quality, but you should find one you like. The other ice effect - crystal - I followed a Deke's technique on lynda.com. I am subscribed. But Deke has a site with a number of tutorials and he might have text effects on it. He's good, but so are others.

Have fun, and any more questions, feel free to ask!
