Hey guys, I am currently playing around with a header design for my portfolio. Just wondering if anyone out there can help me get a glass tile effect as opposed to the one demonstrated. Would like to see how it looks. I tried applying some of the elements used in the glass pill tut (not in the example attached), but it doesnt seem to work in this scenario. Because they are tiles I think the effect would need to apply to all the tiles as a whole as opposed to one tile duplictaed etc.

Any hints, thoughts very welcome
thanks

Hi stickdiesel, how about encapsulating the whole thing and make it as if it is just one tile. Or encapsulate just one half, either the plain squares - or the keyed tiles.
I don't think it would work trying to do it to the individual squares.

Not a bad thought Rantin, I might try and get a glass sheet effect as oppossed to tiles. And have the "digital art" etc seen through it. Be worth playing with, a bit of a shift in concept but I think that attitude sometimes produces best results hehe.

Thanks for the compliment Gauss, I hope it was hehe. :D

B7 :righton: I very much like your design stickdiesel! :righton:

I can show you how to do something along the lines of the attachment. You know, use it as a base to break up the monotony.

thats a cool effect stroker, i dont know why but cd cover or poster for a trance/breaks dj comes to mind. Would very much suit a rave style design :D How did you do it? Dont know if I would use for my site, but would like to play around with the effect and see what can come up with.
I agree about the monotony of my design so far, though I am trying to go for a neat/clean and sharp design, so dont want to anything to outragous. Though the site will continually evolve over the course of my studies and morph alot i think lol.

Thx for the ideas and comments guys :D

[stuned] :righton: really cool effect Stroker!

;) I had a "hunch" that you would be popping by!

stickdiesel, I really like the design and the 'clean' look that you have going... :righton: too much 'glitz' can be overkill. I'm not saying that a glass (shiny/reflective) :righton: effect wouldn't be cool, too, though.. [excited]

;) worth experimenting with!

Ya Im of the same opinion wbiss :D, too much glitz ruins a good concept, have to be very careful, but dont want to be boring at same time, it's a fine line hehe. Nothing wrong with white space etc hehe. Digital art and digital design are two very different things :D

First, I made a D-Map. (Are you surprised? Seems like I'm always doing this.)

For the quick example above, I just painted a bunch sloppy black strokes on a white background. Tossed in some gray strokes just for fun.

Then I used Displace and the D-Map. Important that Tile is used! The percentages I used were 30% and 30%.

After that, it's just a matter of doing whatever to make it even cooler. Of course, try different percentages. Or try it on a photo. Try it on Clouds/Difference Clouds. Mess with blending modes. Toss in Curves. Change opacity. Add a Gradient Map Ad-Layer. You know the drill.

One of the things I did was add a Layer Mask in a grid pattern that matches the D-Map. That is, a 25x25 doc with a 1px border, Edit > Define Pattern, and Edit > Fill on the layer mask. Then I add a layer with very light gray beneath.

Stick, I don't expect you to get crazy with it. If you do add this effect to your banner, you'll probably want to tone it down. But you knew that.

I'm attaching a PSD file. This is what I used for a D-Map. Feel free to pull part, mess with, and ask questions about.

Groovy :D Thanks for that, gunna have a play with it over weekend :}
I like its possabilities. I am currently teaching myself to draw anime atm, and might use it for a banner as a test. Like create something like it with anime line art over it, or etched within etc. Should be fun!! :D

May it serve you well, Stick.

Just for giggles, I did a variation. It's 50x50, but the grid pattern is still 25x25. This D-Map breaks up the monotony of the first D-Map, but it's a bit too harsh for my tastes.

Again, feel free to get crazy and all that jazz.

Also, this variation also works decently with Filter > Distort > Glass.

Here's another possibility using layer styles. It was a bit tedious but only took about a half an hour including figuring out the style.

First let me say that your design is very elegant. To try and turn your tiles into glass tiles, working at 400% for ease I selected the inside of an existing tile using a fixed size rectangular marquee which was 17 x 17 px except the bottom row which was 16h X17w. Command J (Control J) copied the selection to a new layer and the style was copy/pasted. Initially I had scaled the style to look 'right' to my eye and then faded the effect until it seemed right in the first tile. After that the settings were remembered by Layer>Style>Copy&Paste options.

If I were doing this project for real, I'd put my text layer on top but didn't take the time here as I was just working on your JPEG. If you want the style I've put it up on a public drop. The file is named LittleTile.asl.

Here's my result...

awesome effort welles! :} I think its on its way. I will play around with it next chance i get. I'll start back from one of my earlier saves and see if i can get some transparency to it. For the moment I am going to stick with original as I start study again 2moro and my goal was to have my portfolio up by then hehe. I am behind like a week lol. Only because I spent a week of holidays in Melbourne.

I have created the shell for my site at http://www.stickdiesel.com if anyone want to have a look. I have only just come back up to speed with dreamweaver last cpple of weeks and my first efort in like 1 1/2 years. The anime dude, I drew him in illustrator last week and will prob be replaced later, just filling space atm lol.

Thx for all the help guys, I will def play around with it in nxt cpple of weeks, seeing the nav bar was completed in fireworks all I have to do is change the background and replace so not a big job :D
Thanks again!

Site design looks great stickdiesel :} and I love that anime "dude"! B7 :righton:

;\ Here's my attempt.

Selected the squares and saved them as an alpha channel.
Made a copy of the alpha channel, loaded the selection, and guassian blurred 2 pix.
Created a layer above the squares and filled with grey 128,128,128.
Filter/Render/Lighting Effects -Style Floodlight and adjusted the parameters of the light until whole area was covered in the light and choose texture channel alpha 1 copy.
Inverted layer. Set to Overlay.
Created new layer and made a Rectangular Marquee 800 wide x 3 pixels high.
Placed Marquee over a row of squares and filled with white.
Repeated process until all rows had a horizontal line near ,but not at, the top of each row.
Loaded selection from alpha channel 1. Modified selection, contract 3 pixels, feather 2 pixels.
Inversed the selection and deleted.
Deselect selection.
