I know you're asking for help to do this yourself and I really did start this post with that in mind. But as I applied that advice to this image, (part of the problem was the dark BG) it didn't quite work as I wanted. So of course I played around with it, trying this and that, and I can give you the steps as I remember them if you would like. It's a fun technique but works a lot better with a white background. You can see from this image that the color is all over. If the BG is white, it will only color the objects, the dark areas. Anyway, let me know if you'd like to learn it so you can use it on other pictures. Your friends would love being made into watercolors and it isn't a difficult process!
