Quick selection tool broken

I have the latest version of Photoshop. The quick selection selects OK but is stuck on deletion (-) sign in the curser. It has to be a perfect selection or you have to start over. What gives?
 
Not broken!

You can change the selection mode in the Tools Option bar.

You can also hold the shift key for +

If you change the selection mode to positive +, you hold the Opt/Alt key for -
