Sassie, we don't think your a dunce at all, just a beginner. We've all been there. I am however beginning to believe that you do have a hard time reading though! 
You need to set the your selection tools feather to ZERO, not 5%....... ZED if your going to use refine edge or Select>Modify>feather.
If you right click in the empty area of your layers panel (not on a layer) a selection widow will open, choose medium thumbnails.
