Jpeg, gif and PNG are the main web based images however there is a lot of variation and optimization needed.
For example if you have a jpeg with a gradient on it will course lines and unattractive gradients when uploading to the web. This is down to the web only primarily being able to recognize 256 colors when in reality an image can have up to millions of colors and different shades of that color.
But then as browser technology increases this was only a serious issue in the past. Nowadays you can get away with a lot more colours.
In photoshop for example when you use the colour picker you can check the box that will only show web safe colors.
an example of this would be that if you do a bright red square then save it as a jpeg when you upload it to the iinternet you will find it looks over saturated and pixelated. If you go back into photoshop with the colour red selected from the original image then load up colour picker again but this time choose web safe colours you will see more solid shades of red choose the closes version to what you need re upload the image it may not be perfect but it will be a lot better than it was.
So once you ave optimized your colors in PS then you need o optimize your file type. If you go to file> save for web and devices at the top right you will see a preset drop down menu you can then preview each 1 for best results or make a custom profile. Every image will suit a different profile, I tend to start mine off at png 24 preset as 9 out of 10 times that gives the best result for browsers that can recognize higher resolution images.
