This is the last photo of my grandfather before he died in 1978 .
As you can see its very damaged
any help would be most welcomed.

I hope somebody here is better than me, there is no useful colour information and as long as I do not want to paint something into the picture I cannot do more. Sorry.

I am in no hurry at all .Like I say im grateful for anything.I have made lots of attempts but they never ever work .
My knowledge is basic .

I am not familiar with colour restoration but there are a lot of things like that crack on the woman and all the black and white dots that could have been easily removed. As you can see, not all of them are removed, but it's such an easy job :

I used your picture, peta, to do this, I really like the work done so far, but those little corrections took me 3 minutes of time ;)

How high ?
I scanned it as a Tiff so its 64mb in size.I thought this would give me the best file for working with, however filesize restrictions and all that.
What type of filesize would you suggest please?

I can do a little of the patch tool, heal tool for repair.other things I do I use you tube video and usually have it running step by step.Colourizing I just have not got my head around yet.I have done a few simple clone photos of my sons and a couple of pop out photos but thats as far as I got so far.
