by highpass filter I meant : goto filters > others > highpass filter and use a radius of around 8 - 10

I'm using GIMP...I actually don't have an "Other" option under Filters.

That's alright though. Here's my last attempt for tonight, if anyone cares. Not the best, but I'm pretty proud for only starting to learn this today.
