Hey guys'n'dolls...

Just wanted to let everyone know i've just completed a new tute. It shows how to create a "Mercator" -- a wireframe sphere for those not in the know. I go through 2 different 'styles', and there's also a special page showing how to create the single mercator in image below -- or as close as i can get you without coming over to YOUR house and holding your hand. ;)

A variation for doing the base lines. I hacked it out real quick, so the lines aren't perfect.

Make the polar grid. Grid + shift + alt helps.
Make circular selection off-center, again shift + alt helps.
Spherize.
Clean out the corners with ctrl + shift + i.

Gotta fly.

Hey glad you like it everyone, thanks.

But remember... this is a slightly tricky tute/effect to produce. I've found it to be somewhat temporamental in it's final outcome. Tweaking things is highly recommended. ;)

AW you need to stick to the instructions exactly though so you can make a proper comparrison to the example images. Otherwaise, your outcome will not look similar enough to know if/where you may have gone wrong. Using a larger document size than the tute says will produce a different looking effect. And until you are sure of the steps, you won't know how to make a larger version look the same as the smaller one. ;)

GURU TIP: Stick to the road most traveled, until you know your way. Then, you may wander from the path in safety.

Hey Stroker great info... never thought to do that twist on this subject. When you have a moment, perhaps you can spice up your 'basic' instructions here with a few more details...?

Thanks! :)

Woman gone with girlies. Hopefully get this out before they are back.

I started with a new doc at 500 x 500.
Two Guides in the center.

They're back, but being nice. Let's continue.

Checked the Grid. I don't know what it was set at, but the Grid was spot on with the Guides and Canvas.
Grabbed the Line Tool and started laying down lines. Two pixels wide with no anti-aliasing.
The horizontal, vertical, and 45 degree ones where easy. Had to guess for the other lines.
Grabbed Circular/Oval Margue.
Held shift + alt and dragged out circles from the center.
Edit > Stroke with 2px in the center.
Deselect and repeat for next circle.
Turned off Grid and Guides.
Still with Circular Margue, I picked a spot in the lower-right and dragged out another circle with shift + alt. This selection is to be off-center, but not too far off.
Filter > Distort > Spherize all the way.
ctrl + shift + i to invert the off-center circular selection.
Hit Delete.

Tada.
Good for a little dressing the next time you are playing around with planets in a HUD or something.

hahaha DOH! [doh]

Man you got ONE sentence out and they came back huh?! Wheeew! haha Guess you spoke too soon. [oops]

That's great stuff Stroker thanks.
I'm gonna run threw that later for sure.

And i hope OTHERS here will run threw it too.
It shows folks a lot about being resourceful with PS.

Thanks! :righton:

first one okay got it (white background as per tute)

the second one a complete disaster went amiss after or in the channels but kept on going as in the tute........... were did I go wrong Mark?

Wheeew! Hey great work AW, ya got it! :righton:

Sue was beginning to make me feel like i wrote that one in a secret code or something! hahahaa :bustagut:

J/K Sue! :P

AW is right though about you missing the Spherize filter... and that makes me think you may have just missed another step also. Have another run through the tute -- a little slower -- and see if it works out.

Let me know if it doesn't, so i can help. :)

Oh just one thing though AW, i just noticed it... a amall detail, not crucial... but you might wanna try it... before merging your vertical lines down, scale them slightly so that the perspective on the sphere appears to be from the top down -- and not straight-on from the side.
Get what i mean?
Look at the bottom of "Style 2 (Pg2)" -- in the GURU TIPS.

I got to thinking about my polar variation. I think it's a great exercise for PS newbies. You know, a handful of basic tools to do something that is kinda cool and/or useful.

However, writing a tut for it isn't my style. If anybody wants to "steal" it, feel free.

Later, if I feel the need, I'll ramble about the lines some more. The method I used, Guess-timating, isn't exactly exact. There is a better way or two.
