Making a (gigantic) tear/drop, 3D-look...

Hey people,

I'm going to make a webpage, but I don't know how to make what I have in thought...

Without saying too much, I want to make a big tear/drop, which is to be placed on the center of the page, and used as a frame with the contents in it. I want to make it look a bit 3D, so any tips for making it look a bit "out of the page", would be very nice Oh, and anyone have tips to make this look "shiny"? Like.. glass?

Also, around the drop I want to make some sort of waves, going out from the drop in circles, though not necessarily complete circles. The waves are to be kinda "graph"-looking, grey, sort of like those lines you see on heat-monitors and music-visualisation, if you catch my drift? Anyone with tips on how to do this in a good way, please post a reply.

BUT, before I think about effects of this tear/drop-thing, I need to actually shape it, and I'm no good with drawing, nor do I even have an artpad or anything. I'm thinking of having the drop's top in the top-left direction, and the rounded bottom of it in the direction of the bottom right corner. Like I said, the tear should be placed on the middle of the page.

Well, if you read all this.. Hopefully you'll reply too.. :P

If you have any tips, webpages, guides or anything else to post in reply, please do!!

welcome to the madness Nobu :D

Here's what I'm going for, extremely simplified.

The menu is supposed to be a partial outline of the tear/drop so that it looks more peaceful/stylish.

The frame on the tear will have to be bigger in order to display more contents, of course.

Well.. Not much more to say than that. Other than the fact that this is a poorly drawn proto ;)

welcome to the madness Nobu biggrin.gif

Tear shape? Not that I see...?

Welcome aboard Nobu! :)

Are you still looking for a teardrop shape? You can easily create one using the "pen" (vector) tool. ;)

Let us know how you make out...or don't be shy to ask for further direction! :D

Thanks for all the replies and welcomings :)

I've managed to make a fairly nice looking, smooth drop-shape using a circle shape, and the pen tool, curving the lines inward from the top of the drop down to the circle-bottom, and outward from the bottom and up, so it looks a bit more natural, than just a cone. I guess it'll look good once I make it look like plastic/glass.

Any tips for making it look like glass? Trying to use a guide on making a plastic look, but it didn't work out too good, since the example was a letter, and I'm using a shape. Guess I'll just try again.

B7 Cool Nobu! Now that you've got your basic shape worked out, I will refer you to this thread for a discussion on "teardrops". Hopefully, it will help you in your efforts to create the effect that you are looking for. ;) http://www.photoshopgurus.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1008&highlight=teardrops

Hint: There should be "magnification/distortion" (spherize filter should do the trick) to the underlying area of the teardrop. Apart from light/shadow, this will go a great way to creating a realistic 3-D illusion! [excited]

Keep us posted as to your progress...

Hey, that looks real kewl. I like the design youu have going there. Keep it going, I;m sure it will turn out great.

Looking good, Nobu! ;)

looks like your off to a fine start there

now in designing your page don't forget there are people who will view it in 800x600, 1024x768 or 1152x864........ when I do pages I make them either for that resolution of each of them and put a script in (linda gave me the script :righton: ) or just make the whole site for the 800x600
sfm

Hm.. A script you say? ;)

Care to send me that/give a link?

Great start, Nobu! I don't know if you intend to keep it that way, but I really like the black & white. Not many designers do that, and it looks very clean. Keep us posted on the progress :)

Thanks, AppleCider :)

Indeed I am going to keep the page that way, the size of the drop is now also as big as it will get. I may have to make a smaller version of the site, but first I'll complete the 1024x768-one, and then make an 800x600-one, resizing the objects, and scripting the page. If I can find a script which will allow either page display based on resolution... (Less than 1024x768= 800x600 site, 1024x768 and up= 1024x768-site.
