Logo Design - Please Critique

I ride and have raced Motocross (hence the name MotoChief)and have many friends that do the same. I only say that because I know what works in this specific industry. Motoheads like real stuff more than artistic.

A good logo will reach there intended market I dont think it really matters if it has realism in it or not. In fact I am struggling to even think of a successful logo that has any real photo as part of the design.

But end of the day a Logo has to be able to instantly identify that company and preferably what it does but that is not the case if you looked at Starbucks or Mcdonalds there logo is so successful that people recognise the brand from the logo but if I was to show somebody either logo who was from another planet they would have no idea what the logo was for.

Logos are all about branding

Did you know that the majority of the western worlds 4 year old kids and above will identify the Mcdonalds logo

These are both great points of view. Actually, MotoChief, I ride too. That's why I'm interested in doing the website to begin with. If you look at the typical ATV website, they're generally a mess. Have you seen the artwork and layouts? Ugh. I think a graphic logo will work well, if it is implemented on an actual designed website of any quality. But being that I've never done a logo before, I'm looking for any input...I'm a total neophyte with logo design.

Hey Barb,

I also favor the second logo because of its readability. I like the simplicity of the design and I think you're off to a great start...especially if this is your commercial logo design. Well done.

I have a few suggestions that I think would enhance what you already have going. Logos tend to make better first impressions when they visual grab the user. That being said, I would add some subtle gradients to the blue, red, and handlebars which would give it a more 3-D effect. Also, the balanced use of drop shadows and inner shadows can really add depth to a composition.

Also, thought the font readable and clear, I think there is room for it to be more unique. There are plenty of free and creative fonts that can be found at sites like Dafont.com. You might find something there that better suits the look you are going for.

Personally, I think the idea of having the company name ride along the handle bars is a cool one, but it may look more professional if it went straight across. Might worth trying to see how it looks.

Sometimes people prefer a visual example so I took the liberty of making the suggested tweaks to your existing logo. I'm not implying that this is better, but I figured it might help you visualize what I mean.atv.JPG

Hope this helps and keep up the good work,

Treydahn

Those are some great suggestions. In school I've seen so many bad examples of gradient use that I stubbornly took the "I hate gradients and will never use them" approach. Obviously, that's dumb and I need to get over it. I like how you used it here.

Also, using two fonts on "Where to Ride" is something I don't think I would have thought of. Great advice. I'm not working today, but I'll play with it tomorrow and post a version.

Nice treydahn. I didn't even think of layer effects. Good addition.

I have mixed feeling about the text, not that it doesn't work, it does. The 2 fonts are cool. But I think it may be just a matter of preference, just imho.

Is this suppose to be a bike? If so, at first glance it doesn't really seem like it.. Try making it more obvious. IMO I'm not really feeling the curvy text.

I like the initial designs but I felt they were a bit flat, I think that the suggestions Treydahn made were brilliant, it adds a bit of depth and makes it a little more interesting, and I completely agree with the text, I felt the original text is a bit too plain and childlike. Whilst the texts Treydahn used may not be the best, they are a step in the right direction and feel these are great suggestions :)
