layer mask will not open

on certain images, when i hit the layer mask icon in the lower tray, it will not show up on the layer.. if I open a much older image that was taken many years ago just shooting jpeg. it will.. not sure what i am doing wrong

Hi, is your layer unlocked or locked? Are you able to take a screen shot?

The layer is locked. Double click it to unlock
