Just to sum it all up: Photoshop can't handle images created with gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62).
Every other program (and believe me, I've tried a lot) handles these images just fine.
I've also found a lot more images created with this so-called gd-jpeg, so they are (unfortunately) not really rare. My solution is to convert these images with IrfanView to png, then edit them in Photoshop and save them as jpg. Not really ideal, but until Adobe fixes their program, I'm afraid it's the only way.
