I took what I think is a great picture today what do you think

I dont know you can pic up a Nikon D500 with a kit lense for about £350 400 euros at a guess when you take into consideration it has the same image senser as the d90 wich is considerably more expensive you get same results pretty much just not as fancy functions. you dont need an overly expensive camera when you know how to use photoshop and just to prove it this is my girlfriend i took the pic on a crappy cell phone camera ok this was a few years back before i became good at photoshop but highlites the fact you dont need top of the range cameras if you have editing skills

the thing about expensive camera's is that you can zoom really far in and take amazing pic's of insects (like your butterfly pic)

well define expensive if you enjoy doing things get the best you can afford photoshop is an expensive hobby if you do it legally I have spent twice the amount on plugins than what photoshop cost me originally is it that hard to save a couple of hundred Euros / dollars /pounds for your passion yes getting a good camera is worth it do you need to spend a lot no just a basic body where you can change lenses and you buy the lenses as you can afford them

i'm doing my holiday job (or whatever it is) for my synth, that's my primairy passion :D

photoshop cs4 ;)

but =>I<= did not pay'd for it, the boyfriend of my mom had it for his work and on my mom's computer it is availble for me to use, pretty much the reason why :D.

I´m pretty new to photography so I´m no expert, but I bought this camera about 6 months ago and they have lowered the price considerably since they released it about a year ago. It is a compact but it has a 14x zoom and manual functions like a dslr, but no raw. I think it´s pretty good for the price they are charging now at least.

I hope that I can shed some light on the things that have been mentioned here. The first issue would be the blurriness of part of the image while the other areas are sharper. This is known as depth of field or DOF. When you have a subject that is close to the lens and the background farther away and you are shooting with a low fstop you will get this result.

When I shoot outdoor portraits I like to use the DOF to bring the eye to the subject and not the background. Like this shot

As for the other area of concern around the swans beak it could possibly that it was a bit over sharpened or that the compression when uploading that happens when the image put online.

Just my opinions (not 100% sure ever :)

not a bad pic, however a little camera shake is causing the slight blur on the image, too much colour enhancement makes the pic look unnatural .something in the butterflies is not right .what equipment u using.

sorry entered before i was finished. when shooting pics of birds as someone mentioned in this thread DOF is important. depending on your camera and lens anything over f8 slows the shutter down and camera shake becomes a problem.once i am allowed to post pics i will post some of my stuff.i typically shoot with a f4 300mm canon lens with a canon 1D MK 3 pro body at between f5.6 to f8 and am getting shutter speeds of between 1500 to 5000 which freezes the action giving me really sharp and clear pics for both portrait or birds in action pics.
