Ok, when I open them they don't have the checkered background indicating transparent, the background is black. I tried saving as psd and when I opened that file, it had a white background. I've zipped a file and am going to try to attach it so you can see. I am a *total* newbie to PS but am very familiar with Painshop Pro.

How to convert .tiff with transparency to .psd

Ok no simple 1 step solution But I have a fix for you
open up with photoshop and in channels pannel you will see your image automatically creates a hidden channel called alpha 1 which is a mask and hidden. hold down the control key on your keybard and click that channel named alpha 1 and you should see marching ants around it indicating you have made a selection then go to edit > copy and then go to file new and in the document size you should see clipboard select that and ensure you select transparant background. then go to edit paste in your new document and you will have your image minus the black and you can save it as a png or psd and next time you open it in photoshop it will not have the black background

hence the can you post an image so we could see what was going on that was solved in less than 15 mins from when you posted it an d here you go I have created an action for you just extract it onto your desktop load up the actions window and select load actions navigate to your desktop and select the file alpha delete then open up your next tiff image highlight the action press play and the work is done for you, all you have to do is go to file >save as psd and name it View attachment alpha delete.rar
