I am self-taught in photoshop CS3. I have placed a second image (second layer) on the first image (background). Working in the second layer I reduced the opacity and used the lasso tool to outline the object in the background to cut and paste the second layer, to create a third layer in which I can have varying opacities in in the second and third layers. However photoshop is not allowing me to cut and paste or clear for some reason. Does anyone know how I can remedy this. Thank you for your help.

mmm upload your psd and say what your trying to do I will take a quick look see if I can spot anything. upload a psd same way you would upload a picture press the picture icon in the quick reply mode

Nope didn't work again. Is there a specific size the psd should be. I'm not having any luck uploading it? Thank you

I think it is 22mb limit how about unlocking the background layer so there is no padlock next to it hold down control and then click create new layer so there is a new blank layer at the bottom of the pile it may not be letting you cut as it is the background layer or even better duplicate the layer and try cutting from the 2nd layer in the stack which should be the same as the 1st layer

thats why you cant ediot it then you need to unlock it by double clicking the padlock and when the pop up window comes up click yes/ ok or rename it to background or just duplicate the layer and work on the 1 above

Man I don't know. Terribly frustrating. I tried the new layer which did unlock the background, but couldn't cut and paste. Tried the duplicate layer and couldn't there either. very strange

I have CS3 and I tried to duplicate what I think you mean, but I had no problems cutting and pasting. Maybe you could explain a bit more clearly? :)

So, you have a background image, and you have put another image over it as a second layer, ok so far. You have reduced the opacity of the second layer so that you can see through it enough to lasso around an object on the background layer, ok? Then you try to cut out the shape you have made with the lasso and paste it into something. I think I have understood so far. What I wonder is.. what are you trying to paste it into? Have you made a new document with a transparent background to paste it into and use as a third layer? or where are trying to put what you cut out? :)

Hey all, thank you for your responses. I have started over and no matter what I do I am unable to cut and paste this particular layer. Vafann the way I was planning on doing it was cutting from the second layer then immediately pasting to create the third layer. The idea is to have the opacity of layer two very low over the background and the outlying area to be full opacity. I'm at a loss.

Oh and just to clarify I couldn't upload the psd no matter how small I made it. I might have a corrupt file issue.

How are you trying to upload the file?

You can't use the
insertimage.png
button.
