I believe on the PC you'd use the Windows key, but I don't have a PC to test it. Hold Cmd and hover over the layer icon until your cursor becomes a pointed finger with a dotted box. Now click. You should get your selection. If it's not working something wiggy is going on. There is a long method to select your layer. Go to Select>Load Selection and select your layer from the drop down menu under "channel". Same move, longer method.

Hi! I read the forum on how to select laers on cs5 for mac. I tried but it doesnt work. :( I'm trying to follow a tutorial to teach myself how to use PS. Now the 4th step says that I must layer the letter so that when i overlap it with a picture the texture only goes to the letter and no excess outside of it. I tried hovering the mouse on the layer (lower right side) box with letter then command+click. Running border surrounds the letter but when i put the picture above it and add distort noise and opacity it works on the letter but the picture is still a square. I cant get rid of the excess picture. BTW i have only been using cs5 orfor 2 days. Haven't used PS before. Please help!!!

If your image is the layer directly above the text layer right click the image layer in the layer panel and select create clipping mask.

If that is not the effect you want then please link to the tutorial with a screen shot of where your at for more advice that suits your particular needs.

Maybe in a new thread as well because people dont tend to visit old threads.

Thanks Hoogle but it doesn't work :( I have tried various clicking shortcuts and double clicking it.

This is also my first time to ask in a forum or join 1 for that matter. I dont know how to start a thread. :( Sorry a bit tech challenged.

Also how I attach screen shots? Can I also paste the link of the tutorial im trying to follow?
 
You cant post links until you have made 5 or 8 posts I believe if you can describe the effect your trying to achieve then do so here and then maybe we can link you to a tutorial or even tell you how to achieve the effect. I dont suppose it is grass textured text is it just a guess.

To upload an image in your quick reply box you will see

click the insert image icon indicated and choose from computer.

I dont know if it is just me but for some reason I cant upload images to the forum at the moment I am getting a data cache overload error so will look into that

ps I have moved this to your own thread.
 
right click the ice layer the 1 highlighted in that pic and select rasterize layer then right click it again and select create clipping mask see if that helps
 
can you upload your psd same way as an image I will take a look at it I can keep guessing but will be quicker if I just use what you have and figure it out
 
That would be great. I also tried making a new document with the picture uploaded first then layer with font then clip mask the image...I still see the font as black and image is just behind the text layer. I'm not sure if it's my PS setting. I honeslty dont understand what the buttons and tools are for...just yet

Is there something with the photo uploader? I cant see the attch button
 
mmm yes I was wondering the same thing I am having image upload issues as well are you using the the same method as you did before.

Remember a psd is a larger file so may take a lot longer especially if it is around 5mbs in size which I am guessing it is and may look like the upload is just not responding
 
Ok so I tried the clipping of a pic inside a fint it works on a flat font, basically I had to type a font first then add a pic then clip it. Now when I try to bevel the font, the image disappears. I think that's why it never worked on my image earlier. Is there a way to keep the ice on the font despite of the additional effects? I dont want my font to look to flat, I like it chunky and yummy looking Like the font that I currently have.

well you can right click the fx icon in your layers pallet on that layer and select create layer that will move all your effects onto a seperate layer

but then you may have merge that layer with the text layer (which rasterizes the text layer so you wont be able to edit it again as it will no longer be text)

But if you know your text is right and you wont need to edit it again (text wise) right click it with the layer styles and select rasterize type that will keep all your layer effects just as they are and will be the better option if you loose the effects by the create layer option first suggested
 
Yes that method works if you right click the the fx on the layers panel and select create layers then select the layers it creates + the text layer and press control g or group icon to make a group (cmd g on mac) then you can insert a clipping mask.

I'm so sorry I'm new at this. Now I'm stuck with another problem. I hope you can help me out. Took me 2 days to finally get a decent answer about clipping mask. Anyway the next problem is that howcome when I make a popscicle stick it it's not fully colored? I'm using a rounded rectagle tool at 60px because 30 is just too square.

I wanna attach a pic but the uploader lost the upload button again
 
have you just installed a java update I had the same problem clear your internet cache and roll back the java update thats what I just had to do

what do you mean by colour properly I guess we need a screen shot of this 1
