Had to Share - Can't Wait!!

that isn't what I meant. at all.

anyone who wants to use photoshop is missing out if using just a mouse.

You don't need two monitors, and you don't need a Cintiq.

But what you DO need if you're going to use Photoshop even *marginally*, is at the very least, a tablet.

Wacom sells beginner tablets for well under $100, so the "no money" excuse does not apply here. $60 can buy you a good starter tablet for Photoshop.

So put away the mouse, and go get a tablet. You don't understand what you're missing by not using a tablet with Photoshop.

Wacom sells their Bamboo line of tablets for very cheap and are an awesome way to learn tablets for cheap. Don't tell me you can't come up with 50 or 60 bucks. A car costs more than that for a tank of gas.

Using Photoshop with a mouse is like finding your way through a corn maze with blindfolds on - impossible.

I completely disagree except for maybe illustration work everything else is perfectly achievable by using a mouse.

Yes a tablet has many benefits and does make work easier once you can use it properly but it is not a must have product
I would put it in the list of preferred product. If you are on a tight budget I would suggest putting your money towards a good screen and computer over getting a tablet. There is no way your running cs5 on 3mbs of ram you need 1 gig just to open it up even if your using windows XP

Priorities would be to me at least a 1 gig graphics card minimum of 3 GBS of Ram and I think that is the minimum spec cs5 needs
a good CPU if you will be using 3d elements of PS hence the 1GB Card.

But if this is just a hobby then not everyone can afford $600+ for photoshop $800+ for the computer and then on top of that a $100 graphics tablet.

and then there are other things to take into consideration are you using photoshop to enhance your photography if so put your money into the camera and lenses etc first before graphics tablet.

I tend to disagree with this bit, don't mean to add to the argument, but i'm using a 512mb HD4550 on my desktop and 3d works perfect on it. mind you i suppose the quad core 3.1GHz processor will help out a little XD. and i'm using 1gb on my laptop, works fine. mind you it is a tad on the slow side :P

yes but what ram are you using and more importantly what operating system. If you are running Vista then that will be laggy if your using 64 bit operating system on win 7 or xp then yes it would be fine however that spec on indows 8 probably will work but you could be looking at a 10 - 15 second photoshop load time when opening it.

Using Ubuntu matey, The laptop is quite old so DDR2 at about 200-300Mhz at best. with wine because it's deficient, the hard drive is almost dead and the PC's processor is only 1.5GHz single core it takes about 30 secs to load XD doesn't bother me much, i usually put the kettle on while i wait...
the desktop as soon as i click the damn thing its there.

Well that is a different story ubuntu can run with just 128 Mbs of ram windows vista windows 7 really needs 2 gig just to get into windows. Oh if only adobe made a fully compatable linux version I would be a happy man.

true, true these days it's 300 and something i think.
and i would be a happy teenager, no more messing around with winetricks or spending hours loading directx9 onto the system to flipping run it properly XD but let's face it, Linux users are a minority, i don't think adobe would put millions of dollars towards a small group of people using linux.

no apparantly if i remember correctly they will be launching a linux besed version at some point but dont quote me on that.

I have a wacom tablet and use it a lot, i also still use the mouse (old habits) no problem or worries for me or anyone still using the dinosaur of computer drawing.

Back to the topic at hand.....

I haven't done more than look at the 3D part of CS5, to be honest, but I have spent some time playing with the pen tablet. It is definitely a process. After messing with it for a bit I don't think I'll ever actually get rid of my mouse. Aside from the fact that I use a mouse for everything else I do on the computer, I find navigating around the desktop cumbersome with the pen. I use keyboard commands quite a bit, of course, but I still need to navigate around the menus and I am not as comfortable with the pen as I am a mouse.

That said, however, the precision of the pen while working on the actual image was evident from the first time I plugged it in. Aside from some simple graphics done for the web, my major endeavors this week have been photo restoration of some old family photos. As most of you know even better than I do, this can be a precise and time-consuming project. While an image of a tree doesn't change much if you re-arrange it a bit, restoring someone's facial features can be a disaster with even a 2-pixel shift. It's also much easier on the hand and wrist to do fine detail work with the pen, since I tended to grip the mouse rather tightly in an attempt at control.
