How does one take a piece of a picture to make a macro though?

How does one take a piece of a picture to make a macro though?

I just crop out a piece and scale it up on a larger canvas

 

[chrisdesign]

But choose a very high resolution image to start with. Otherwise details will not be recognizable on your macro piece.
