Creating Tribals in PS 7...How do I do it?

I think that joed means that you can use the vector mask function of photoshop to mask some pictures.

As for the scorpion, it is a good start! The pen tool is definitively not the easiest one of the pack! Make sure that the legs are more curved and spikey, like most tribal works are.

I think i get it, but could you elaborate a little?
Sorry, I don't do in "little" :D

So I'm showing you now in more detail how to create a mask using vectors.

  • Make sure that the layer that contains the background is not locked
  • Select the pen tool and check that paths is selected (screenshot #1)
  • Use the pen tool to create a closed path around the lock (#2). No need to be to precise. You'll see later on how to adjust the anchors and handles.
  • Now select Layer/Add Vector Mask/Current path; Photoshop will create what we call a mask, in this case it's called a vector mask (#3).
  • Again, use the pen tool to create a closed path to hide what's left of the background (#4)
  • Use the Direct Selection Tool to move the anchor points and handles, to increase the accuracy of any of the two paths (#5). Make sure that you zoom in.[/list:u]

The strong point about vector masks is that you can easily adjust the mask! You can also easily mirror the mask, so that you can select the background only.

Be aware though, vector masks are not very suitable for fine details like hair for example.

I added a small copy of the original padlock in case you want to practice.

    Have fun! 8}

do you mean something like this :D

tell you what though, I REALLY need to get an optical mouse!!!!!!! My old roller-ball just isn't cutting it anymore!! [honesty]

hey everyone, Thanx for the help you have shown me, I really do appreciate it!! :righton:

From what I have learned here, would have taken me a month of sundays to figure out on my own! Thanx for that "little" tute on vector mapping! Now I can do more with this beautiful prog!! ;)

Thanx again!!

here is something that I came up with that tends to look more like a "Tribal" than the scorpion does! Personally, I like the backgraound effect -- I think it looks like something you might see at a SPENCERS in you loacal MALL!

Actually, I was trying to create a sphere with the whole thing but haven't been able to figure it out to make it look like a 3D ball -- It keeps on looking like crap! I used the 3D sphere filter, but can't seem to make it work right!

If any one has an idea, let me know. I still have the original PSD file to work with!

I'l keep working on it!

Hey guys, kinda figured it out on my own. Anyway, here is the thing I was working on. An Avatar that I wanted to use at another site (Iwas gonna use it here, but there is a file size limit -- 10K, and my avatar file size is 30K. I know its small, but I think you'l like it!

I read this thread just now and I am impressed by your progress. It so nice to see people lika you adopting new techniques and getting good results. Keep up the good work :righton:

Perhaps your avatar would be even cooler if you didn't rotate the lightbursts and added a few more steps in the rotation. Now it is close to blinking...

I like that idea!!! Keep the background stationary, rotate the top and keep the lens flare where it is!! I'll get to work on that right away!

AND thanx for the encouragement!! Sometimes that's all it takes -- along with a hint to something else!! :D ;)

8[ Did anybody find GORT yet? 8[

Something is wrong -- when I did the lock, it worked! Now, I try to do the lock and instead of the lock staying -- IT hides and doesn't stay!

what is going on?

NOW, I have a real question -- How can I get the new cutout image to rotate with the current path selected? All it does is allow me to rotate the path itself but won't let the image to rotate as well?

The reason I ask, is because when I try to rotate the "canvas" by anything other than 90 deg. or 180 deg. the image itself gets smaller after rotation!

Well, I figured it out on my own -- If you were wondering, I had to define the shape and then rasterize the layer before it would let me rotate just the image layer and not the background!

A LOT OF WORK TO DO THIS ONE! Has 36 separate frames!

Unfortunately, even at 90x90 pixels big -- this file is 197KB!! Which means I would have to make it so small you would need a magnifying glas just to see the thing!! :(|

I am going to post a question to "The Keeper" to maybe allow a one time posting of this work! I am just a beginner, as I have only had the PS 7.0 program for about 3 months now -- and only just used Image Ready 7.0 for the first time today!! :righton: :D

Well, sorry you all couldn't get a chance to see it YET! I will figure something out before too long though!

BTW, 8[ WE FOUND GORT!! 8[ 8} [confused] :righton: ;) :D

Well, let's try this! I uploaded the image to my family website! This way I eat up only my own disk space and not our beloved and revered Keeper's space!! Please enjoy the fruits of my labor!!

JoeD is right. There is hardly a place for such a large file on the internet. In fact, even though you are hosting the image yourself and just linking it here, it still probably isn't the best idea to do so. The problem is we still have to remember that many forum participants will be using dial-up connections and a 2.7mb file can take a half an hour to load. That makes the forum useless for them.

Drat it is a neat image.

To Welles -- Tanx Kid!

And to JoeD -- Tanx To You Too! and to anser your question -- I have a much smaller size for myself over at http://bfarber.com where you can view AND download it if you wish! The smaller one at that site is about 200KB instead of 3MB! To be able to download it, you will need to register -- but registration is free!

If you do decide to go there and decide to reg and DL the image --

1. Click on downloads
2. Choose Avatars
3. Scroll sown to the "Click Here To Download" -- If there are more than one, click on the screenshot of the one you want first, then "Click Here To Download" You can even add comments if you scroll down a little further if you so desire!

It's that easy! I have other stuff there as well, so don't be shy -- look around! Lots of free stuff over there and the people are like they are here -- Real Cool!

Anyway, there you have it! This one makes me beam with pride! :D Please enjoy -- for if it wasn't for the help and inspiration I got here at this site, I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did in that short of a period of time!!

Thanx again for the kudos!!

8[ WE HAVE FOUND GORT! 8[ 8} :righton:

And I can only apologize to those that don't have faster connection speeds! I mean, come on -- this started out being a big project for me and I hope that anyone that reads this that has dial-up, will go over to bfarber.com to DL it for free! It is a much smaller version as I have said before (about 200KB instead of 3MB) and easier to get it! [confused]
