Hey all, thanx for letting me join for free!!

I am new to the site, but not too new to PS!

I am trying to create a "Tribal" of a scorpion. Would like it to be black with a silvery outline. Just not sure about how to make one! Can anyone point me in the right direction!? ;\

Not sure what you mean as a 'Tribal' please explain.

And BTW welcome to the site - everything here is free - thanks to the theKeeper our host and Mentor.

What I mean by "Tribal" is the picture attached. It is a black design that looks like a dragon. I want to create a Scorpion in that "Tribal" mode. I already created the starburst to go behind it -- now I need to learn how to create a "Tribal"!

That's like asking how to get to Carnagie Hall.
Practice.
Tribal design is a form of styling that cannot be broken down to a precise, "trace by number" thing. You have to have some drawing skills, and you have to have an "eye."

The simplest version you could start with would be to draw outlines of the major shape forms making up your scorpion, and then filling those outlines with your version of tribal stylizing, be it sharp angled blades or arrow head shapes with or without exaggerated/swirling points.

Do a web search and look for tribal designs that inspire you, but don't just take someone else's works.

Good Luck!

Hi mflintjer,

I'd suggest that you could come close using Styles. Here's an example (I didn't bother with the radient light burst) I made using a vector scorpion from Illustrator, originally black and white, and imported into PS where the black and silver style found in Sue's Styles #7 was applied and then modified to taste (scaled and that sort of thing) The styles are a free download found here...

Thanx MsOz & Welles for the pointers.

To reply to MsOz -- that's exactly what I am trying to do MAKE MY OWN!! I don't want to use someone elses work to make something that I want to call my own. I am too creative for that ;) !

To reply to Welles, thanx for the link and info -- very helpful

One more question to all, Is there a site that has different autoshapes as a download -- or do I just need to experiment with PS for right now? If there are more autoshapes out there, they could make this go quicker -- but if not, then oh well!

thanx for everything!

One more thing, How do you do vectoring (I know it can be very detailed, please just give me a quick run-doan on it)?

I have been reading about it, but don't uderstand exactly how it works!!

Thanx in advance!

mflintjer, be aware that there is a lot of knowledge on this site, but you do need to search for it using the search button. This is a recent thread that I found: http://photoshopgurus.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5899

You said earlier that you're too creative and that you want to make everything yourself. Well there you go, this is a great opportunity to learn more about vectors. Vectors are very useful, it takes a bit of practice in the beginning, but with the right tutorials you'll get the hang of them in no-time. Also make sure that you learn the different pen tool shortcuts, they make life a lot easier!

Good luck ;)

mflintjer,

Actually, [/b]JoeD[/b] is right on in his suggestion that this is a great opportunity for starting to learn the pen tool. If you do a Google search for 'Photoshop pen tool tutorial' you will find many great resources. For your immediate scorpion needs, I've made three different custom shapes of scorpions which you can download and add to your shape library and then load them to use with the custom shape tool. Once you have drawn out a shape it can be transformed or you can use the arrow tools to select paths and, with the direct selection tool you can begin to drag points and change the shapes (Even that will have a learning curve but much less than drawing them from scratch. ;) )

Thanx again for the info you all posted.

To reply to JoeD, I meant general autoshapes, not scorpion autoshapes. When I saw what Welles created, I thought to myself "now how do I go about creating that?" Answer: I used an autoshape then used the Transform in the edit menu to skew it! It worked! Now I just have to go through the other autoshapes afigure out which ones I want to use!!

And to reply to Welles, thank you for the ideas!

One last thing, I am trying to create (from scratch) an XP bootscreen! I have already made one with a pic that I got free from the net. I got permission from the author to use it, as long as I gave her credit for the artwork. Still, the whole kit and caboodle isn't completely mine. I just used something that someone else created, and put it into something that the creator didn't do yet!

Now, I am on my way to making that crucial "Original Creation by mflintjer". Right now I have PS open and am currently working on it! When it is done, I will post a reply to this forum topic with the picture for all to see! I will also post a hyperlink to the site that it will be available at for free!! Yes I said for free! I believe that just because I created it, doesn't mean that everyone else can't enjoy it too!

Once again, Thanx for the info, and I hope to be done with it today sometime (right now the Steelers are stomping on the Eagles -- Hell YEAH! at about 1:30 p.m.). So be sure to check back again to see the pic!!

What the heck is autoshape?
I assume that mflintjer meant to use the existing Photoshop shapes and to modify them by using pen tools or the edit/transfer path options. ;)

I wondered because there is something in the Windows world which is associated with PowerPoint and called AutoShape. While I have MS Office, I never use PowerPoint. \:]

Well, here it is! I finally did it! When you critique -- please be kind ;\

To reply to JoeD's staement -- yes default shapes in PS!

Also, I finally figured out on my own how that "Pen Tool" works -- very powerful!!

well, enjoy!!

Yep, it does look good! I just wondered if the light burst were a little bigger so it showed a little bit under the lower legs if the scorpion might stand out a little more. Nice job! :righton:

thanx for the kudos!

I already sent copies to friends and family -- just waiting to hear what they have to say!

On the vectoring issue, that pen tool is very helpful and powerful! I didn't know what that thing was for before so I never used it. You can bet your sweet bippy that I'll be using it more often from now on!!

Oh, before I for get, I have posted the original creation at the hyperlink below. There is a Wallpaper, an XP LoginScreen and an XP BootScreen that you are welcome to use if you wish. To be able to download the items, you will need to register first, but it is free and there is some really nice stuff there by other artists!

Don't forget that the vector tool is also a great tool to remove certain backgrounds, just ask Mark ;)
