Adjustment/Fill Layers

Thanks G-Man don't you love this tricky stuff?

Incidentally, the colors on my monitor are so much prettier than here. For example the background color was dark blue, here it looks black. Got any tips for adjusting? I think I remember following the Adobe recommendations when setting up monitor --but certain colors go flat and darker when posted.

Thanks for the discussion on fill and pattern layers. That's one of the features in the half and half circle that I have not experimented with...thanks for the pointers!

new fill or adjustment>curve I'm getting diffrent result

can you help me on this?
Hi, I'm trying to recreate a certain tutorial on this site Create a Photoshop Mermaid Image Manipulation | Simply PSD Photoshop Tutorials with my photoshop cs4

But was at a halt on step 4 : requiring an adjustment layer.
Procedure: Now select the layers palette, activating the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon, selecting Curves from the options. Centre your curve so that the image becomes much lighter. Then press Ctrl/Apple+l, inverting the layer. Apply Curves Layer, applying extreme shadows this time, before inverting once more.
result: layer appear on the layer window is: a histogram and a mask

My version: when I try to select adjustment layer icon>curve. Adjustment:curve dialog box appear with little choices then the result i'm getting is different.
result: layer appear on the layer window is: half circle icon (icon of a adjustment new fill) and a mask

What did I missed out? need help. thanks
