Wrapping a shape in paper

Hi all,

I'm a long-time Photoshop user (since v2), but not necessarily an expert. Would appreciate some guidance from the gurus as to how to achieve an effect I'm after.

Working on a new website design for a client, and for the pre-launch landing page I'd like to be able to take the logo (the outline of which is basically a five-pointed star) and wrap it in brown paper as though it's 'under wraps'. So I'm guessing I need to take an image of brown wrapping paper, mask it in the shape of the logo and then give it the appearance of 3D as it curves around the edges of the object. Adding parcel string would be a nice addition, although may be pushing my luck.

Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

Thanks,

Pete

Well, like you said make a star shape selection and cut it out of the brown paper. Add a Layer Style with a Bevel & Emboss and a drop shadow.

It would look something like this....

If this is not what your looking for, let me know.

Not really convincing enough. That looks more like a wooden star floating a cm or two away from a wall; what I'd like to achieve is as though it's been wrapped in brown paper.

My own effort at achieving this doesn't convince me either, btw, but maybe will give you a better idea of what I'm trying to do.

I think, specifically, it's the edges of the star shape that needs though. In order to have that authentic 'wrapped' look, they probably need to be less even as well as shaded to look 3D. Then, probably, some work on the layering of the paper to be more believable that you can wrap a star shape (i.e., you can't wrap that kind of object with a single piece of paper and no folds / overlaps).

I had a play with displacement maps, but didn't have much luck as I'm not trying to project the logo onto the surface of the brown paper.

However, a bit more fiddling and experimentation and I've come up with this. Any suggestions for improvements?

I like your last version. Since you asked, there a re a few minor adjustments you can make.

The masking at the end of the ropes is off.

Your shading is off and you could do some dodging and burning to help the accent the paper.
This is a bit exaggerated to show what I mean...
