From time to time I purchase templates for clients to build out into sites. The templates from places like Envato are pretty solid. they include PSD files with most elements.
I'm having a problem more and more working with files that have a large number of layers. If i move a group that has a lot of layers that are heavily styled on a page from one side to the other, the software locks, and it takes about 45 seconds to actually complete the move. I don't understand this, as I've got plenty of hardware to handle even the largest processes.
In looking at my usage, I see PS is clearly multi-threaded, but no matter what I do I can't seem to tweak things to utilize the hardware I have.
I have 16GB of RAM which should be plenty. I also have a decent, but not lightning fast CPU (17 2600 Sandy Bridge that's pushed to 4.1). I also built this PC to handle files and processes quickly. I'm using two Vertex 4 SSD in RAID0. getting in the upper 900s for read/writes, and have tried using those drives for the entire system, or changing the scratch disk to a secondary drive (SATA 3 6gb) but nothing seems to help.
I can't seem to figure out how to get PS to use my hardware. It's insane that these files completely lock up the system. I read documents that they claimed these issues were going to go away in CS6, so I paid for the upgrade from 5, but frankly, while there are a very large number of improvements, performance, at least at the top end, doesn't seem to be one of them.
During these lag times, and while I'm working, I have a resource monitor running in a second monitor, and I can see that very little of the available resources are even being used.
With the pros on this board, maybe someone could lend a hand and give me some ideas in increasing the performance of CS? Frankly, I'm really only using PS, Illustrator is like walking on Mars for me. Which stinks because honestly, from what I see, most of these things should be built using illustrator and not PS. But that's another topic. I do use Dreamweaver from time to time but the horrendous memory leaks curb a lot of that, and I use notepad++
Anyway, the reason i need this, is i built out pages using the template PSD files which generally include one file with all the elements, so i can drag them to my workspace. But that's so tedious because it takes MINUTES to move large groups of layers, and since it's hit or miss, I have to wait to see if what I moved goes where I wanted it to.
I used to think maybe it had something to do with the PSD itself, or something, but recently I built out a storefront in PS for a client, and as I got heavier into it, i experienced the same thing from what started out being an empty PSD.
help a newbie out please! All input greatly appreciated.
EDIT: of course, after looking and loking and looking for a long time, something just occured to me to review my settings and I noticed something.
If I turn OFF thumbnails in the layers panel, the problem is almost completely gone.
I can't believe I looked this long for a fix and just happened to notice it today.
Well, you can close this thread, or leave it open for other newbies like me, and hopefully they'll catch this fix.
wow.. what an enormous difference.
Truly though, what a shame. I actually do use the thumbnails quite a bit. But when? When I have files open that have a large amount of layers. so I guess that's out the window. even choosing the smallest ones reintroduces the problem.
I don't suppose anyone knows a better solution?
