In photoshop how can I get text to follow a curved line (like an arc or wavy line) and not show the line. I don't know how to do either

Look for that its called Warp Text and you can modify the effect in the option bar
ONLY WORKS ON TEXT LAYERS AND USING THE TEXT TOOL
 
you can also make a work path with the pen tool and then use the text mask tool which types in the path layer.

then fill the type with whatever background you want.

The line you draw and warp with the pen tool will not show up on your print or photo, but if it bothers you to see it, when you get done getting your type the way you like it you can click on paths and drag that work path to the trash can at the bottom.
