Hello everyone,
I'm considering making a website to market and sell some of the woodworking products I have been building, cabinets and pieces of furniture, things like that. I'm thinking a nice wood graing background or look and feel would be nice, maybe with some screw heads for buttons and things like that. I'm just curious if anyone has any tips or tutorials that they've seen on creating a realistic looking wood grain pattern. I'm sure I'll eventually come up with something acceptable, but why re-invent the wheel if someone has already come up with it!!

Thanks in advance for any tips you may have. PS, This is just in the idea phase, however when I get the site up, I'll post up a link to get input on the finished product (and my woodworking projects..)

While I like the wood effects that one can create with PS, I've worked with wood for nearly 50 years and see replicating wood in PS is cartoonish at best, compared to the real thing. Yes that's true for the very best anyone has been able to do. With that in mind, a while ago, I got some nicely figured or colored samples of six woods, polished them down 1200 grit sandpaper, finished them with Armorall to keep the colors true, and did high resolution scans. I've posted samplers of them. The scans are saved in very high resolution JPEGs and PSD files. They go from 22Mb to 70Mb or so. If you are interested in any of them, I'd be glad to post them on a Apple site which has a very high bandwidth for you (or anyone) to download.

What can I say, thank you everyone for all the replies and links. I expected to check back and find maybe 1-2 posts, I'm overwhelmed. What a great, sharing group of people here it seems.

I've checked several of the tuts and links, and played with some of the techniques, and agree with Welles, I haven't found anything that is what I"m looking for exactly, until I saw some of Welles images that is. I would love to get my hands on some of those images if you can put them up somewhere, outstanding job. I will be sure to give you credit on my site where I use them as well!!

That's obvious; nothing made in Photoshop looks really realistic and using pictures solves any problem, but it's no fun is it guys? :P :D

Furthermore... If anyone wants a good size version of those wood scans for web (they could be resized just fine, too) I zipped copies of my original files only at a 100dpi resolution rather than the original 600dpi sizes. The final images are PSD files and they compressed to 14Mb, a compromise between file size and download speed. You can get them here...
