The winners of this year's International iPhone Photography Awards were announced. I hadn't yet seen this, but I immediately looked at the winners:

and

There is some wonderful photography represented. In addition, I think I picked up on several interesting features common to many of the photographs.

Anyone else have any comments on the winners or even the contest, in general?

We have our own "minimal equipment" photo thread that certainly includes photos taken by iPhones. How 'bout we work on getting PhotoshopGurus.com represented in the big contest next year by practicing in our own thread.

Cheers,

Tom

I have seen some incredible images taken with the iPhone, that is a good idea.

Yipes. I was reserving mine till the time is right. Quite awkward lugging 3 phones around.... lol.

What are those other accessories that go with it? Gotta look for those things.

When I saw the first image from the first link immediately though of Afghan Girl.
I don't know how they do it.
My Droid Incredible 2 is supposed to have a pretty good camera, but it's horrible with fine detail.

There ya go wouldn't that be something.

Bit OT but it is I phone related.

Just fixed a couple and was amazed at the CAMERA size! and the quality of the unit...
camera is next to the battery

$60.00 and 1 hour of time spent on each

Wow, Mike. I'm impressed at the size, and I'm even more impressed by you taking it apart and getting it back together again. Good for you!

BTW, I don't know if it struck anyone else who looked at the winners, but, IMHO, every single one of the winning images was 'shopped -- some heavily, some less so, but still 'shopped. The most common adjustment that I think was made was to adjust the uncontrolled lighting on the original scene to be either more even, or more contrasty/broody, etc.

Thoughts?

I was thinking of that the first time I saw the images. Couldn't believe that a small camera as such in any hand held phone could take such quality pictures.

Even then, the takes are a far cry from the Nokia 7650 - one of the first to feature a camera.

Yeah I thought chopped also. The iPhone has the capability to tweak pictures not sure if it was Photoshop or not

Yup, iDad, usually it's impossible to tell if the most significant post processing to an image was done in-camera or was done afterwards, on a computer. The task is made even harder because we never see the original files that were submitted, but always a version of each that was prepped for publication by the contest organizers.

That being said, one can make a good guess about a few of the winning images because they have signature looks, like those run through Instagram or through freebie iPhone apps that essentially only do one thing, e.g., "Pop Art Lite"

In contrast, I have both a desktop and an iPhone app version of Tiffen DFX, and there's no possible way I could tell whether or not I processed an image with DFX on one or the other, except that I tend to go crazier with my phone when I'm passing time on the train. LOL.

One app I *really* like for the iPhone is "645 Pro". It's only $3, and (among other things) produces beautiful black and white images like this.

Yup, that was done with my iPhone. Back in my black and white film days, I would have been tickled pink to get an image looking that good out of my darkroom.

PS - BTW, the only thing I did to that B&W photo after it came out of the iPhone was to run it through LR to automatically fix minor lens distortions and vignetting characteristic of the phone, and then down-rez'ed it for posting in this forum. I didn't do any levels adjustment or anything else. I didn't even have to fix any keystone distortion because to take the photo, I held the phone flat against a window, so it was guaranteed to be oriented perfectly on at least two of it's three axes.

I'm funny in this way, I don't usually get an app unless it's from the app store, the app"645 PRO", is not within the app store that I can see. Not Apple/iPhone approved?

I've had it for a while, so my memory is a bit hazy, but after seeing a bunch of good reviews and no complaints, I think I got it direct from the developer.

I don't think it's available anymore. from what I see on the page
