will there be hope for this design?

Long time programmer who just lost a designer. We are used to doing about 5 designs a month. A programmer doing design is almost plagued from the get go but here goes.

This is *my* first design really, spent about 45 minutes on it so far, color picking etc etc.

Anything that I am doing wrong big time? I was thinking maybe another 5 hours and it would be fairly good to go.

I suppose it depends on what , or who the design is for, but from where I'm sitting at the moment, it doesn't look too bad.

Don't like that squiggly thing though, it could do with some work, but the layout as a whole, is pretty decent.

It's not bad, as spruce said it depends on what you are trying to achieve and what the site will be for.
