Whiting out texture; preserving shadow and lighting

Hello! I've taken this photograph from google images, of four flags:
flag_poles2013_10_24_11_3223_10_2013_22_32_43.jpg
What I'm hoping to accomplish with this image is to remove the textures of the flags but preserve the lighting on the ripples, creating effectively four blank white flags onto which I can overlay the textures of four flags of my own design. I'm very new to photoshop, and unfortunately I'm having difficulties accomplishing this without wrecking the image. I've been selecting the flags with the lasso tool and playing with the levels, contrast, colour balances and so on but truthfully I have no idea what I'm doing so far.

Any help would be very appreciated! Thank you in advance!
