White to Transparent

I have a single layer image with a white background, but I need the background to be transparent. The white background also happens to be the only white part in the picture, so is there a way that I can isolate the white and make it transparent?

using the wand tool, u will be able to get rid of the white background.

you could also open the options of the layer( double click the layer)
then you will see 2 sliders on the bottom
on the top slider hold ALT key and click the white arrow for the slider and drag left.
this will split the arrow and the whit will go away further you move it to the left
