Illustrator white box around image

Hello all! I am new to the photoshop and illustrator world and don't know to describe my issue, so hopefully this picture will help...

I cannot figure out why this one image has the white box around it, while the other 2 I did do not. I am eventually going to combine these images into a single graphic, but I need to figure out what I did wrong first.
How do I make it so just the dogs face is the picture without the box?

create a new blank layer and unlock the original layer. Put the blank layer under it. Right click your dog layer and select blending options the first tab. move the white slider towards the black and you will see the white dissappear
 
What I cant figure out is how the other 2 images I did didn't have this. Did I skip a step in the trace process you think? Or is it just because it is on a locked layer?

I am not seeing this option. I am using AI CS5 if it matters...
 
not sure what your images are or layer options I would achieve this effect using threshold filter. and maybe pallette knife for that pop
art look which looks pretty cool lol
