when i change the angle of an object it effects the whole project, so if i have selected an circle and put the angle of a drop shadow to 90 degrees then i selected a recltangle and set drop shadow angle tp 120 degrees the circle will change to also be 120, does it always do this or am i just doing something wrong?

sounds as the two layers are linked and you are set up that all layers are global, un check that then set each layer to its own angle

Exactly, even if they aren't linked, global affects the whole document. When you go into the dialogue box for your shadows or bevels, look at the circle which indicates angle. To the right of it is a checkbox. This is for global light and basically keeps the shadows going in the same direction. If you want to circumvent this, uncheck the box.
