Whats smart object?

When I've selected an area to transform in some way, sometimes I get a message that I can't do it because it's a smart object. I also notice in my layer that there's a little black and white icon in the corner of my thumbnail on the layer. How do I get past this? Thanks!

Hey, two questions, are you working on PSD's that you did not create? Or, did you just forget that you turned it into a smart object?

This is a Smart Object.

I'm actually asking for a student. They dropped in images from websites and that seemed to be part of them. Can you un-smart an object?

Yes, just right click the layer and choose 'rasterize layer'.

BUT..........you want to use smart objects! If you don't know about them it would be very wise to learn how to use them.
