It's been happening for quite a long time but I didn't really mind until today when I had just downloaded some brush stroke brushes and plopped them into PS, but why is the texture repeating? Therefore I can't make any clean, singular strokes and I have no idea which settings i should adjust.

Hello and welcome to PSG. Sorry you are having brush troubles.

It's been happening for quite a long time but I didn't really mind until today when I had just downloaded some brush stroke brushes and plopped them into PS
This has been happening for awhile because it's the way the Brush Tool works. Downloading a new custom brush set will not change the way the Brush Tool operates. Based on your example screenshot, I cant see any problem that you are having. The Brush Tool is acting in a normal manner.

Danger Pig brush. Totally normal.

A normal round brush will offer the best results if you are wanting a clean brush stroke.

What you are trying to accomplish will determine the type of brush an setting you need.
This is a custom calligraphy brush.

It would really help if you explained and provided an example of what you are trying to accomplish. This will help the forum members in explaining brush use and settings.
Also, brushes behave very different depending on the device being used. A Pen Tablet (Wacom) is far superior to a mouse as far as settings and subsequent outcome is concerned.
