What Was The Reason Behind You Joining Photoshop Gurus? (Long Term Members)

The question really speaks for it's self, a question generally asked to long term, Frequent posters or reoccurring members but Newbies can join in too if they want.

Be as honest as you can be or as you would like to be.

I understand some long term members may not be able to cast their mind back that far, that's alright, instead, why not give the reason as to why you keep coming back? what is it about the site that brings you back to post?

Why not answer both?

When i started over here, i was needing help with a couple of images and methods for photoshop CS2, Since then i was given Photoshop CS5 from mothero, and what draws me back to this place is people's willingness to help, and the kindness most members show (there are a few trolls, but they are usually dealt with pretty quickly)

I'm not sure if you would consider me a long-term member, but I'll answer the question anyway.

I had progressed in my Photoshop learning to a certain point and wanted a community where I could both teach and learn. I went to several places recommended by others and that went very badly. Either the site was centered around people making money or (which was worse) were very dismissive of anyone who was not on an expert level. When newbies came on those sites they were savaged for their lack of skill - which no doubt made the regulars feel good about themselves but which did not offer anything helpful to the person asking the question.

PSG was different I saw people getting real help and encouragement. Criticism was given, when asked for, in a constructive and supportive way. There were people of all ages, nationalities and skill levels. Also, and this is important, there was not only a steady stream of people asking for help but also a contests and challenges for the regulars to keep our skills sharp. (I miss those....)

So I keep coming back, and I probably always will. I really enjoy being here, and enjoy all of you lot too. I've been thinking of getting the challenges going again. Any interest?

I'm not sure if you would consider me a long-term member...

Thanks Sierraccr, that was a very insightful write up there, and i'm glad you wrote it.

I know exactly how you feel about the whole savaging new members thing, i had the same issue with a photo forum, and then i realised it was better and more painless to ask here, Hoogle and a few others, without fail seem to answer whatever questions i have in photography, and always give honest, but not harsh critique.

it's a very positive comment sierraccr, i loved reading it :)

and you are a reoccurring, frequent posting member, so you have as much right as the rest of us to give your reasons why...

and of course, i'm sure we'd love it if you restarted those challenges.

The challenges just faded out less and less people did them just like the chop shop is doing with regular members. The truth is everything has a life span and it needs revamping somewhere along the lines.

The reason I joined was because I knew the answer to a question and had to be a member to answer it for them I think but not 100% sure and then I got carried away within the community.

And that is what psg is it is a community where we all get on every community has an idiot of a neighbour somewhere and we have them here as well, there are people that join up just to troll and be idiots but we soon enough deal with them.

But we are a welcoming community and try our best to help people out when needed. And I think as a community we probably do help out about 95% of questions probably more and that is what attracts more people here.

Pappy's gonna tell a story..... lol .

I joined PSG but never thought of being an active member - just after the tutorials that were downloadable on the front page and within the forum. But after reading post after post, I was attracted by the warmth and helpfulness of its members. And ever since I made that first post, I was hooked to this day.

Other forums spoke well of PSGurus - for its accomodating and helpful members - a down-to-earth atmosphere ... as one PS site put it.

It is this warmth and helpfulness that became the hallmark of the forum. At it's heyday, there were over 2 dozen mainstay members - part forum Guest Relation Officer, part Photoshop trainor , part asylum inmate and part MOD (I'm not rubbing it in... lol... but we even went to the extent of having SPAM tin images ready to upload for such an event). Back then, the members addressed each other as Gurus and Gurettes.

There was a time that the forum went off-line for a week. The site owner and Mods had to open a temporary PSG forum elsewhere just so we diehards can have our daily PSG-fix.... lol...

I'm proud to say that a few young members who joined with limited knowledge of PS became dedicated members and went on to become succesful Graphic Designers in their own right.

It is with high hopes that the present crop of active members carry on the tradition of PSGurus.
