Hello all. This is pretty much a noob question, sorry in advanced!

Does anyone know what effect they used for the text in this Machete Kills poster? I'm doing a mash-up of the same poster, but with a different face and would like to try to make the text look similar.

I was thinking it's either a 3D effect or perspective, or something. Please let me know.

Thanks!

I wouldn't be surprised if this was created as an image rather than a text effect, as something like this is very easy to do in a program like Flash or Photoshop.

Here is a simple method i used to create a similar effect, note this took me about 5 mins to do, but im sure if you put more time into a proper version, you can get a much nicer looking text effect.

If you have difficulty with the lines, you can use this method to create a bolder 3D. It is also a lot easier to follow.

Hope your work goes well!

Hi EvanTG, and welcome to PSG.

There are easy ways to accomplish this text effect and much more involved ways.

The easiest would be if you were running an extended version of Photoshop with a 3D engine.

If you don't have an extended version, then the old extrusion method would be my choice.

Here is a TUTORIAL on the extrusion technique.

Here is a minor change in the tutorial that better suits the 3D text example you posted. In step 02 Starting the effect, I would make a duplicate of your transformed text layer (command/control + J) make a selection of the duplicated layer (command/control + click the layers thumbnail) and fill it with black, then proceed with the extrusion. That way your extruded material will be black. You can stop the tutorial after you merge your layers, the rest of it is if your using a color for the extruded layers.

If this give you any problems, let us know! Good luck!

Thanks a lot, Keebs! Option #2 is exactly what I was looking for. Much simpler than Option #1 and because I don't really want to be too much time into my small project, Option #1 was just the better choice.

Like I said though, I just wanted to recreate the text effect from the Machete Kills poster, didn't really want to go further than that.

Again, thanks so much for your time! :)

Thanks, IamSam for the warm welcome!

Before yesterday, I didn't know Photoshop Gurus existed, but very glad I found it because just by your guys two posts, I know that this Photoshop community has very friendly and knowledgeable/experienced members!

And thanks for your helpful post! I'll definitely keep that 3D text effect tutorial in mind the next time I want to create some decent looking 3D text. :)

Whoops...meant "Option #2 was the better choice" ^^^, hehe.

Oh yeah, one last/quick question...are new users able to edit posts? Reason I ask is because I don't see an option so I imagine only users with a certain amount of posts can edit.

Thanks again!
