weird text tool problem

So all of a sudden, without any changing of any settings, the text tool has been giving me serious problems. First when I type something in my selected field and then hit enter to start a new line, the text just overlaps with the previous line. Secondly, the font size of 30 is literally showing up small enough to be size 2 lol what in the world is going on here? Appreciate any info.

The font size is relative to the canvas size. In both images below it is set the same, on the left is a 7X5 canvas and on the right is a 20X30. Set the leading in the character panel to control the space between lines.
