weird color change problem

ok so this is a stupid problem to have. im trying to make a custom background. i start a new project with random sizing, turn the whole background to a dark red color that i liked. i then went to my splatter brush and chose black to add some black splatters and it magically was spewing the same color as the background... slightly lighter. how could it possibly not register that i changed the color? i tried random colors and still the same thing... please help.

what is your brush mode set to do you have color dynamics enabled or even have your blending mode set to something other than normal

thanks for the reply! for some reason the blending mode was set to something else that may have been why. i just closed and re opened photoshop, tried again and it seems to be working. thanks so much.
