Velvet Goldmine Poster Effect

Anyone know how to achieve the effect used on this Velvet Goldmine Poster?

I have what I think is the original image and I'd be interested in learning how to achieve the effect seen on the poster for the movie. I've messed around with threshold which gives similar shading effects , and then with layering with a coloured image with reduced opacity - but this doesn't look quite right. If anyone has got any advice on how to achieve the effect it'd be much appreciated . I was getting pretty close using a series of gradient maps and masks. It started getting complicated when I hit a wrong key and stumbled on a much simpler way to get the effect:

First, apply a Threshold adjustment layer to the image (I used a threshold setting of 128).

  • Make a duplicate copy of the original color layer. Move this duplicate layer to the top of the layer stack.
  • Apply a Surface Blur to this layer to remove most of the skin and fabric texture. (I used a setting of Radius=4 and Threshold=28. You can experiment.) This gives a flatter, more poster-y effect.
  • Change the layer blend mode to Multiply.
  • Add a Vibrance adjustment layer and increase saturation, to your taste.
  • Done.
