I have a client sent me his logo he wants on his new site. He wants to to change the text but everything is vector. I've never had to do this before so can anyone tell me if this is possible and how?

Thanks in advance

Welcome.

That depends on what type file you have. The best is to open the file in its native format application.

If the file has .AI extension, you can open it in Adobe Illustrator. Another form is .cdr - only can open with Corel Draw .

You can import the AI file into Photoshop but all the vector layers will be flattened. When edited, it is certain to lose crispness.

Thanks for you fast reply. It was sent to me in a zip file and when i unzipped it it had an EPS file and a jpeg file. I need to edit the text on the logo. I have PS and Illustrator but never done much work in Illustrator.

The EPS is for printing, I suppose . Both can be opened in Photoshop . For as long as you don't resize them, the quality may not be affected much. You can convert the selected image on a layer into a PS vector (pseudo-vector, I call it) in Photoshop. But it will not react like a true vector. Probably the EPS will open without a background to it.

The only concern is the text. If it overlaps the logo or is on top of the main logo, you've got to be careful and very precise in editing it out.

Thanks dv8_fx for you help. I can't open the file except the jpeg file. The EPS file seems to be corrupted and won't open. I've sent the client an email explaining the problems with the file. I zoomed in on the jpeg file and I think I can just clone the text off the background and add the new text. I'll let you know what happens and thanks for your help.

if you recived file in .eps format it is most likely vector only, meaning you may not directly edit text in it as the text has been convetred to curves in it. eps may contain editable text but it is not the mainstream.
just in case check if you have fonts that were used intalled on your computer.it would be nice if you can recognize fonts used or ask someone.
jpg file there is just for the viewing purposes there, for the end client that doesn't have vector able program to see how it looks and this jpg is usually given in low resolution.

like dv8_fx mentioned, you will need coreldraw or illustrator in order to edit such files, but you may only replace original text with yours new.
from experiance, sometimes it happens that coreldraw can't open eps files created in illustrator due to the compatibility issues.

Thanks guys for your help.ibis it wouldn't open in CorelDraw either.
I called the client and explained to him the problems I was having. He seemed to understand and asked me to design him another logo as close to that one as I could get.
I really thank you guys for your input and will probably be doing business with you again. :-)

Corel has its own file format but you can IMPORT the files into a new corel draw document.

If you use Corel Draw, open a new document and set the layout resolution to at leas 150dpi (I usually use 300dpi). Once imported, lock the layer and use it to retrace the logo on new layers .
