Using Dodge/Burn tools over shape on layer with effects

Hello,
I made a heart with the pen tool and gave it a gloss and shine effect (somewhat similar to a balloon) using layer effects like Satin, Gradients etc. However, it needs proper shading in certain areas which can only be done if I could use the Dodge/Burn tool over this shape. I tried but dodging and burning doesn't work on it.
It's already a Raster because I converted the work path to a selection and then worked inside that area on a new layer. What should I do?

Just create new layer over your heart, fill with 50% gray, set mode to Overlay and use Dodge/Burn tool on it.

Thanks:)
It works...though there's just one little problem. The shadow areas that are too dark don't seem to be affected by the dodge tool. I've set the range to 'Highlights' and Exposure to around 60%. Though following your advice did give me good control over the other areas in red.
